My Tantal (1-9 twist, TT serial numb) keyholes with 60 gr Silver Bear and 60 gr Wolf, but not with the 53 gr Russian Surplus. Every time. Just a report. It is CIA. Would the barrel that comes with the Atlantic Arms parts kit help the keyhole issue? Does it need a faster twist? I have no access to the 70 gr rounds.

| Check my thread in the ammo section. My Lancaster shot fine with Barnaul 53gr HP's and Wolf 70gr FMJ's. Keyholed the Silver Bear 60gr FMJ's. Had 2 boxes of the SB ammo shot the one and sent the other to a Bear ammo rep in Arizona and am waiting for a reply to what they found in their testing. I calipered my 2 remaining boxes 1 Silver Bear and 1 Wolf. The Silver Bear calipered out between .214 and .217 while the Wolf came out correctly at .221. Edited to add MidwayUSA has the 70gr rounds for 5.99 supposed to be back in stock 3-4-2010 according to their website, Honestly if I had known this rifle/caliber was going to be this quirky I would have bought an Arsenal Legion in 7.62x39 instead. Just weird that the AK's seem to have this problem while I never see any mention of it in the AR section. |

That may be so but do AR's in this caliber have the same keyholing issue they're made with American barrels in 1-8 and 1-10 twists? Yet no one seems to complain much about keyholing in them. I've never shot a real AK just civilianized knockoffs but the caliber certainly didn't last long at all once the Soviet Union fell apart unlike some of the other former combloc calibers. |

Just stick with original barrels that have 1-7 to 1-7.68 twists. I have never heard of any key-holing issues with original barreled AK74s. I don't know what the deal is with the US barrels. Some my be good and others bad - that is why I stick to the original deal. ETA- Also, your rifle sounds like it is GTG. Wasn't it only the bad undersized ammo that key-holed? |
