| I paid a premium price and I must say that it is in like new condition. My thinking is to send it out to a builder with the NDS-1P receiver that I have. It makes sense to me to have it made as close to original appearance as possible. Does anybody have any suggestions for me? |
| I'm in Southern California. So far I have exchanged an email with Gary at Overland in Arizona. I'm hoping to make the most of the fact that I paid a premium price and not just sandblast it and crank it out into an everyday shooter. Appearance matters to me. After a day of shooting I like to look at my gun and like what I see. The builders I'm hearing about sound a little eccentric or at the least unclear about delivery dates etc. |
Well, it doesn't matter all that much how good the kit looks if you are going to strip it and refinish it does it? If you want it as close to original as possible I would think you would only finish the receiver and leave the original finish on it. Although a polish finish isn't all that great to begin with. |
It ain't going to look that great with a Monster Man grip on it being from So Cal. If you want the best go to Marshall or Butler at AK USA... They'll build something you won't want to shoot but just admire... Spooky |
If appearance matters then you really bought the wrong type of firearm for where you live. Because to make it legal some big changes to the looks of your rifle are going to have to take place. I don't think you will be able to keep the underfolder stock. You will need to get a Monster grip instead along with a fixed stock. You will also need to find a rear trunnion for sale (with mounting screws) and buy that for your fixed stock to attach to. The NDS-1P receiver will not work, you will need to get a NDS-1 instead. The only way you could keep the underfolder stock is if you somehow found a way to permanently attach the magazine. If your builder is a FFL then they will need to jump through some new DOJ hoops if they ship the rifle back to you when they are done. You may want to post this in the Cali HTF since they could steer you on the law. |

The folding stock can stay, pinned into a locked open position so that if I or the rifle go to a free state it's easily restored to function as original. Monsterman grip is not necessary if a 10 round mag is locked in place with a device that requires a tool for removal (a bullet tip or edge of another mag qualifies as a tool). A 20 or 30 round mag with a spacer in the bottom so it will only hold 10 rounds keeps it okay in the appearance department. Thanks for the beautiful rifle pics. What finish/paint did you guys use? |
