If I walk into a store and pick up a AK what should stand out as a "Don't buy me"?
Ex. : how to tell at a glance if sights are canted ect... Thank you all, Drew |

Sounds like you already know what to look for. As far as how, simply look down the sights and see if the front sight base is canted to one side or the other.
All lot of what to help you with is going to really depend on what you walk into the store and see. There may be other issues associated with other factory-built AK's, vendor-built AK's, and home-built AK's. Hard to answer without knowing which it is and what it was built like. Here's some very general things I'd look for but each isn't necessarily a deal-kiler and most of the time can be fixed fairly easily: - nice price - amount of wear, if any (rifling, parts, etc.) - canted front sight base - canted rear sight leaf - smooth action - threaded barrel w/the plunger detent pin in the front sight base - bayonet lug - cracks in the furniture (if wood or plastic) - egged-out areas where the rivets are - decent finish throughout - magazine fit in the magazine well - legal parts - fit-to-finish quality - what, if any, accessories come with it There are a lot of great sellers out there and sadly, a lot of disreputable ones that will gladly sell you an expensive AK that may not be worth the money. Just take common sense in the store with you and really look a rifle over as you would anything else. |
