Hello fellas,
New guy to this forum but not to guns and shooting/hunting.
I have a question. Got a buddy who has a Valmet 76 in very good condition.
Folder in 5.56 cal. He is asking 1500 or it. Should i buy it in todays
climate and if so is the price right?
Thanks, Chuck

Thanks for the info. I suspected it was a very good buy. I'm going to see if he'll take 1200
and when i get it i'll post pix here. It's like new. He never gets it out of the safe.
Had another hunting buddy who had one converted to select fire back in early 80's when
you could still have a smith do that. He has long since sold that one. Bet he's wishing
he still had it now.

Chuck,

The price is very good. It is an excellent rifle. How many magazines come with it? They are NOT inexpensive.

This is true. Has anyone been able to come up with a reliable conversion for the Bulgarian mags? I've seen pictures with them in the Valmets, but never read any commentary.

Here you go.  I did this a few years ago when I stumbled onto a pristine M76 folder with 1 mag, bought a few more 30 rds Valmet mags at $100 each and decided that they are too valuable to take out so when I heard Tromix was modifying AK mags to work, I thought what the heck, AK mags are cheap (at the time) and I like to tinker so out came the dremel and a few flat files

I've tried Bulgarian AK74, East German AK 223, Galil, but nothing worked like the Bulgy 223.  The key to reliable and safe operation is the feeding angle, I noticed how the original Valmet mag feeds then tried to replicate it but no success until I got a Bulgy 223.  Loaded up some dummies and function cycling through, look at the feeding angle, the Bulgy feeds the round almost straight in just like the Valmet. ****** The opposite is true with Galil mag, the tip of the bullet would contact the barrel edge, sometime hits the chamber end, shoved the bullet in then popped up enough to chamber  - a big Ka-Boom waiting to happen!***

A lot of filing the backside plastic and steel shelf to allow the magazine to click in and drop out without sticking:

most excellent! Thank you! This makes me want to buy a Valmet even more! Had one years ago but mags were unobtanium and I sold it like an idiot...

Get one if you can, the Valmet is even good looking (for an AK )  BTW I mentioned that I tried converting a Bulgarian AK74, it did work well afterward and with 31 rounds capacity to boot.  However, the process was time consuming and somewhat painful because had to modify a .223 follower to work in that 74 body (there was no 223 mag rebuild kit available at the time so I had to scrounge the 'Net for a 5 rds 223 mag to cannibalize its follower and made it work with the 74's 30 rds spring  Too much hassle!

Bravo,
Thanks for the tips on the mags. I'm gonna hook up with my bud this weekend and see how many mags come with
the rifle. Regardless i'm gonna own it. It is just too good a deal right now to pass up.
I'll post pix when it is in hand. This is one of my AK "grail guns" so i'm happy camper right now.

For $1.5K I'd snag it. That's a hair more than some over-priced ARs and AKs of late.

I paid $1.5K for my fixed-stock M76 with zero import markings and furniture-grade wood, and $1.7K for my beer-keg tuber-folder M76.

The instant you handle an M76 you'll know why they are worth Polytech Legend money.
