Took my fixed stock yugo M70 to the range this weekend. It is a Century build of typical quality and appeared to be well done. Anyway, I fired a mag and a half with no problems. Then, round about the 2nd mag I guess; the top cover started popping off at the FRONT, where its forward edge slides into the little lip in the rear sight base right under the rear sight. I put it back on and again it poped off after one or two rounds. When it pops out of the groove it also pops up enough to hit the bottom of the rear sight and elevate it about 5 or 6mm and thereby throw off accuracy. I checked and it was properly seated at the rear of the top cover, locked in place. Any ideas how to fix this problem? Anyone else had the same issue?

Look on the inside of your top cover to see if the carrier is hitting it, sliding/knocking it back some.  You may need to add a small bit of an extension to the front of it to keep it locked in place if it is on the edge of holding on there.

Properly locked in place? If it is properly locked in place I assume this means that the top cover is properly installed and the top cover button lock has been pressed to allow the spring to move back against the cover (the easiest way to install the top cover is to install the spring and NOT depress the button, then put the cover on and then press the lock button allowing the spring to move back and lock the cover on).  This means the spring is locked in place, this makes it incredibly difficult for the top cover to 'pop off' so this is my first suspicion, that you don't have it properly locked.

If this isn't the case your top cover may be to short, this can happen if the spacing between the front and rear trunions is different than the original rifle.  The way to fix this would be to bend the botton of the back of the top cover rearward increasing the lenght.

Just a couple of guesses

A friend of mine bought one of these too and had the same problem, top cover popping when shot. He was lucky enough to be able to just tweek the back of the cover out a little and now it works fine.
Check yours out and you might be able to do the same.

The top cover was properly locked on when shooting. Each time it popped off i re-seated it making VERY sure the spring was locked in place and the button properly locking the spring in place in turn. I'm going to try to bend out the back a bit, I think if I could squeeze about 2mm tops out of it then the front edge would have just enough to lock into the front trunion. If that dosnt do it, I may get a spare top cover from CFS if they still have any of the yugo parts, and then I'll modify it by welding a little extension on if need be. I had a yugo UF that never did this... Guess the tolerances during mfg. could have been a bit tighter over at Century.

Bend (bow) the back....common solution even on originals...my shooter grade kit cam with a pretty good "adjustment" to the back of the top cover.

I under stand what you mean about it locking in the rear but check the front. If the front isn't in the grove very far and the rear is locked it will still pop out. When you tweek the back out a little it pushes the cover front a little, making it sit deeper in the front groove.

Put the back of the top cover in the vise, bent it out a bit and re-fit. Worked fine, but have to tap the cover in place a bit. In any case, I shot 30 rds with no problem so its staying in there. The gap at the front is much less and its very snug when putting it on and locking in place. Not going anywhere now. While I had it apart, I also polished up the chrome on the bolt carrier with some brasso. Looks a bit better now and functions way better.

"...but have to tap the cover in place a bit.

There's a film clip out there of Kalashnakov giving instruction to a bunch of recruits.  His AK is mounted in one of those table-top holders you can buy that makes working on the rifle easy.  When replacing the top cover, he slaps (with gusto) it into place with the palm of his hand.  Later, the recruits are shown doing the same thing.

I'm also glad you got it taken care of, from popping that is.

You might have tweeked it a little to much. But if all it takes is a little extra force to pop it back on, no big deal, as long as you don't need a hammer to do it. ;)
