I have wanted a decent M76 for some time. Years back, I bought one from Ohio Rapid Fire, but cases kept separating about a quarter inch ahead of the case head. I tried other batches of ammo with the same issue. I called ORF, and they said that they only use and warranty the rifles with PMC ammo. I said that was ridiculous as I bought the rifle so I could use quality 8mm surplus ammo, and not only did they not say anything about that when I was discussing the purchase of the rifle with them, but no one in any of the cities around where I lived carried PMC ammo. Besides, I didn't want to be tied to only using one brand of ammo in what was supposed to be a military type rifle. They were kind enough to refund my money.
Ever since then, I have wanted to get another M76. They weren't available for a while, then Century began making some up, but had quality control issues. Which (if any) of the currently offered M76's are well enough made for me to warrant getting another one? I'm kind of leery of Century as I have heard lots of stories about crooked sights, gas systems, or problems with bullet guides. Any advice will be much appreciated. |

check out my review on the AOW M76 I bought in this section and in the Yugo section on theakforum. Read both, different response to each post. ETA link http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=4&f=89&t=134976 |

Quoted: I got my first Century M76 and found the barrel installed with a 2-3 degree can't to the left. Send it back to them on my dime (they should have given me a call tag) and they sent the same damn gun back! Called them and returned it for a new one. This one failed to feed and extract reliably, then after 25 rounds the firing pin stuck in the primer cup of a fired round and broke off. I returned it again for my money back this time. Stay away!Quoted: If you do a search on Century Yugos you will find many positive posts/feedback on them Not necessarily so with the M76s. They are definitely hit or miss. |

If I lived near Century, I could go there and pick one out that looked like it was put together properly. However, I'm not willing to trust the picking to a group of people who have already demonstrated that they will pick out and ship rifles with crooked gas systems, or crooked sights on them.
I would even be willing to pay a bit extra for Century to send someone out to sort through the rifles they have available and see if they have one where all the parts are mounted straight, and all the parts are properly installed...including the bullet guide. I don't think I should have to pay extra for a part that is standard on the military rifles. That would be much like paying Division of Civilian Marksmanship extra for a Garand to have a bolt hold open device. |
