I might get one of these mainly for collection to represent SKS and the unique features these rifles have.  However, what are these like to shoot: Are they reliable?  Accurate?  Are they "real shooters" or prone to trouble or what?  I have read a few posts about problems, but that may not be representative.  Anything to watch out for?  Thank you.

I have put about 500 rounds through mine and I love it.  More accurate than an AK for sure.  These are only prone to two problems.  1.  Make sure you take the bolt apart and clean ALL the cosmoline out of the bolt and firing pin.  Otherwise you could get slamfires.  2.  Check the gas valve if you are buying a used surplus one.  The gas valve can get corroded out and cause you to have a bolt action SKS.  However, if you do end up with a bad gas valve, you can buy a replacement for around $15-20.

I bought an excellent condition 59/66 and cleaned all the cosmo out of the bolt.  I have never had a single problem with it.

No problems with mine 1970 M59/66 A1.  Only thing I have had to do to it in the past  2 years is put in a new gas valve.  Mine shoots about  2 1/2 inch groups at  100 yrds with the iron sights.  This is my 8 1/2 x 11 target I shot about a month ago  with Golden Tiger   ammo.  Brown Bear shoots just as well.  Got my gas valve from here. www.cncwarrior.com/comersus/store/comersus_optReviewReadExec.asp?idProduct=1&description=59%2F66+Yugo+SKS+Gas+Valve

I own 4 of the yugo sks rifles. 1 new, 2 excelent, and 1 shooter grade. I took the shooter grade out last weekend... Nothing but problems. It would not eject the spent case from the rifle, it would slam it into the breach face and not pick up a new one from the magazine. Failure to eject. Worked fine when I turned off the gas valve and cycled it manually. I guess i should replace the gas valve and see if that has any effect. I'll take it out again next trip and get a photo of the jam if that helps describe it. Any suggestions?

My bet is the gas valve, pretty common problem on the old 59/66.  I replaced mine and it runs perfect.  Lots of threads around about this particular problem.  Surplusrifle.com is a good resource also.  I bought mine from Murray's guns in TX.

Replace the gas valve first  make sure you clean everything related to  the ejection system including the spring and oops rod under the rear sight the gas tube and  gas piston.  Also one thing  you need to do is make sure you have a clean chamber.  You can buy a brush for that 7.62 or 30 cal. chamber brush or just use a 20 Ga. shootgun brass or bronze brush. Put a few well soaked patches of Hoppies in there and let them sit awhile, then give it a good scrubbing.  Clean it out with  some dry patches and just a light oil to keep the rust down.  People don't realize just how much  lacquer can build up  in the chamber over a period of time I clean mine  every time  I come back from the range.
