If you have an SKS with standard 10 round mag, how easy is it to convert this to take 30 round mags ?

Thanks

It's easy.

First off, do you  have an owner's manual.
If you don't, then you should print this off:
www.sinsideout.com/sickcity/arcana/manuals/firearms/SKS_Type_56/SKS_56.html
It will show you not only how to maintain your rifle in working order, it will also tell you how to remove the trigger group, the first step in replacing the magazine.
Once the original is out, just reverse the procedure with your hi-cap magazine.
BTW, putting an aftermarket magazine in your SKS is unadvisable, even though there are those who've had workable experiences with them (including myself) but they're in the minority.  You'll most likely have a better functioning weapon with the original undetachable 10 round magazine using stripper clips.
To be honest, I have NO experience with the undetachable hi-caps, but I hear they work well.
Good luck.

Thanks for the info. I'm ok on ARs, but ney to SKS. I would ideally like to use detatchable 30 rounders like I do with the AR.

Is this possible / easy / advisable ?

Thanks

It's possible, and it's easy, but as far as reliability goes, it'll be hit-and-miss.  Try it, but keep your original magazine--you might find that  you'll prefer it!

Where does one find a 20-round perm attached mag?

Thanks for the info fellas. Looks like once you've removed the standard fixed mag, all you need to do is re-assemble the rifle and then go ahead and use the non-fixed mags (i.e. no alteration to rifle required except to remove factory mag)

I reccomend against the detatch 30s.  I have not seen one work reliably in the 13 or so years I've owned an SKS, with moderate practice stuffing the mag from strippers is faster than a mag change in the SKS arrangement.

I think tha CTD has them is stock right now.

BUT...
my experience has been that the larger mags work fine standing, but if you need to shoot prone or from a tripod they get in the way.

The stock 10s are so fast to reload using stripper clips that I have gone back to only them.

Forget the detachable mags.  If you are not careful, you can create an assault weapon and get you some time at the silver bar hotel if you get caught.  Remember, the def of an assault weapon is semi auto, detachable mag, and two of the evil features: bayonet lug, grenade launcher, pistol grip, threaded barrel or flash suppressor, or folding/telescoping stock.  On the Yugo's coming in, they have the grenade launcher and bayonet, but are not assault weapons because they do not have a detachable mag.  But you put one on, and you have made an assault weapon.  Not legal.  Forget the detachable mag and enjoy the SKS for what it is.

But if it's a C&R SKS, it is a preban rifle.  That should make it exempt from the assault weapons ban.

Not at all. C&R has nothing to do with the Ban. C&R guns are not exempt at all. In fact, if you modify it it is not even C&R eligible anymore.

I can't ask the ATF legal questions by e-mail, so I'm sending them a letter.  I'll post the answer whenever I receive it.
