Hey guys, other than ruining the look of a classic weapon, are there any disadvantages of a heavily modified sks? I saw one at the gun show today for about $400, and plan on going back tomorrow. Didn't take a long look at it because I don't know much about them, but it's a Yugo, and I did notice it had a tapco mag. It looks a lot like this: Link

Any expected problems? Good deal or no?

IMO if you're looking for a 7.62X39 carbine that takes detachable box magazines the AK is a much better choice.

Just beware of 922r.  It looks as if it's got a lot of US made parts on it, but you always wonder if you've missed one.  I remember when I bought my Chinese for under $100, so $400 seems a lot to pay for an SKS, no matter how it's dressed.  Are you wearing body armor requiring a collapsible stock?  Are you shooting @ night that you need that fancy flash hider/muzzle brake?  Granted, it's kewl, but if it's not 922r compliant, it's also illegal.

The SKS is a solid platform - I've been in a car wreck w/ a round in the chamber, & not a discharge; but it's also difficult to scope - in order to clean it, you have to remove the rear dust cover, which makes a repeatable zero from a dust cover mount difficult.  To clean the piston, you have to remove the piston tube, which is under the forward upper stock, so that location has the same problem dust cover scopes have - where your chap has mounted the forward rail, & the rear rail is on the removable dust cover.  There are receiver side mounts, but the receiver has to be tapped & the stock notched to accept them - and then the ejected cases are known for battering the scope above the action.

There's a reason you can purchase entirely US made AKs - but no one's ever bothered to build the SKS here.  $150 or less will get you an AR lower, and by careful shopping on the EE, you should be able to build a working AR for not much more than this tricked out Yugo.

Thanks guys, seems like a pass then. What about a normal Yugo SKS? The going price seemed to be around $300. I was looking at AK's too, but there wasn't much variety. What's a good/cheap AK? All I kept seeing were Century ones for about $600 and that seems kinda ehhh. I also saw a Saiga converted AK for about $700 but I'm really not looking to spend that much.

A standard SKS is a good rifle. It's effective if you use the original magazine, use surplus stripper clips and do some practicing reloading.
I prefer the handling of the original SKS over the Yugoslavian version, but that's just a preference. Check the condition of the bore on a Yugo. Many were not maintained properly after being used with corrosive ammunition.

While My SKS is not a Yugo ( Sino-Soviet ) it does function 100% with the Tapco magazines ( now 4 in number ), Tapco stock, Tapco fore end, Tapco gas piston . I'm just not  stripper clip kind of guy I guess, nor do I put any added value on a un-modified SKS ( unless unfired Chinese parade model with documentation ) . I did add a Primary Arms M3 red-dot ( mounted on the fore-end, and still holding zero after hundreds of rounds ! ) The SKS in it's stock form or Modified can be a formidable weapon with practice. .......WVleo

Ignore the get an AK comments. If your mechanically inclined you can tweak out mostly any of the bugs if they occur. I love my tapco stocks, but that's me. The tapco mags run pretty good. If you do the SKS bolt Mag mod. You will have a better functioning and advanced rifle than the AK. AKs dont have an empty mag bolt lock. Its not a huge deal but it saves some micro seconds.
