I've been messing around with a beater Chinese SKS.  I have the barrel trimmed down to just under 17 inches and the gas system isn't working reliably now.  It doesn't cycle reliably about half the time.  Have I messed it up beyond repair???

Im not a gunsmith, so take it for what its worth. But it would make sense to me that when you shorten the barrel you shorten the gas systems time to scavenge energy from the powder charge. So more than likely all you really need to do is open up the gas port off of the barrel to allow more energy through faster. You might be able to get it functioning better by lubricating the bolt and cleaning the gas system without having to do all that. But I would think that it would be a job for a gunsmith to tune the gas system like that, but in no way did you ruin the rifle.

I agree clean it first, then if that doesn't work you will have to open the gas port up a bit.

I trimmed this one to 14.5 with a perm attached Y/H flash hider to make it 16"

it won't cycle as it is unless I add my custom made AK muzzle brake or my suppressor.

I shortened my yugo down to 16 1/4 inches and it would not cycle, I drilled the gas hole out bigger, I do not remember what size though, now it runs like a "chimp" . I replaced the Yugo sight and gas block with chinese parts and put an aftermarket gas tube on (ebay) dont know who made it. You need to put an aluminium cleaning rod inside the barrel and drill the gas block out 10% oversize at a time and test it for function until it cycles reliably.
