I have a ChiCom SKS, and using stripper clips can be a pain.  I see videos of people quickly getting the rounds into the magazine; however, when I push from the top, not much happens.  I end up pushing the first half of the rounds in first, then the last half.

Am I doing this wrong?

The only gun I've ever had decent stripper clips for is a K98 Mauser.  My SKS's are just like your's.

I have never had any problems using stripper clips in any of my SKS's.

You just need to put top bullet on the stripper on the lowest part of your thumb closet to your palm.

After this you would want to push down in increments, pushing down then re leaving pressure then pushing down again and repeating until the stripper clips is fed out.

Some stripper clips are crap to begin with, the lips were the rim of the cases slide can be rough or have to much paint on them I like the blued steel ones the best.  I took mine and used a bench grinder and wire brush to polish the inside of the lips and in between were the cases slide, wear some gloves while your doing this, or you can take an old  casing and work it back and for to smooth out the rough edges if you don't have a grinder or use fine sandpaper.  357 or 38 special cases will also fit in the stripper clip if you don't have an old 39mm casing.

Where is your thumb placed on the rounds?  When using stripper clips your thumb has to be as close to the clip as you can get it without slicing open your finger.

That's comforting.  Way to scare the newbie.

Some states don't allow carrying 10 rounds for hunting with the SKS  I got a wild hair this morning and made me some 5 round clips. I just loaded 10 rounds into the stripper and marked the center between the 5th and 6th round placed it on my railroad  track anvil and used a 1/2 inch wide chisel and with about  2 good whacks it was cut in half.  The pinch the chisel made served as the case stop on the back of the stripper clip, then all I had to do was smooth out the edges from the chisel  cut on my bench grinder and use the wire brush on my grinder to polish the metal edges till there were smooth.  I made about 10 of these in  little over an hour and they drop in and load like a dream one right behind the other for 10 rounds no fuss at all.  I can carry a couple of these in my shirt pocket or vest for quick access and there  just right for the 5 round hunting mags or the modified  10 round mags with a stop block use  for hunting in states that only allow 5 rds. in the  mag.

If the 10's give you problems you can always make some 5's out of them.

OK, I'll ask. How do YOU cut them down, and is the other half still have enough servicable length left over to handle the other five that would be there ???
I can see where this might come in handy, but it still seems a waste of a good ten rounder.

It's always the "2nd" or "3rd" round from the bottom that holds me back.

I found if I put the stripper clip in the notch, run my hand along the side of the rounds from bottom to top or from top to bottom THEN push down on the rounds they will go in.

By running your hand from the bottom to the top before you push down, it straightens up that 2nd and 3rd round and allows them all to push straight down from the top.

Thanks, worked like a charm

I have always had good luck with stripper clips. I have had quite a few sks rifles over the years. Some of the clips are shit to start with, Just weed through them and keep the ones that work good.

I've had problems only on one SKS, the others have all been fine with stripper clips.

Most of mine had to have the retainer tabs bent to reliably hold rounds in my SKS chest pouch.  They can be tweeked to bring them back to 100%.  It also help to soak them in mineral spirits in a 5 gal bucket and swish it like a wash tub.  This clears out any debris or other crap that might be in the rim retainers.

I have found that I need to "break-in" the Chinese clips through the use of a bronze brush and some range time with maybe a little tweaking with a needle-nose. Once they are "broke-in" I never have a problem with them.

The Yugo clips that came with the surplus ammo have worked flawlessly from the start but I have only tried a few so YMMV.
