I have a yugo SKS and I have seen where when people pull back the bolt it will stay in the pulled back position.  My bolt for some reason does not stay in the pulled back position (except if I pull up this little peice of metal to hold the bolt from hitting the reciever).  So my question is, does anyone know why it does this?  I can't seem to figure it out, I have taken it apart, cleaned it, and checked it to see if there is something there that shouldn't be.  Thank you all for the feedback.

There is probably some cosmoline in behind the bolt hold open, take your rifle back apart remove the bolt and magazine from the receiver, use some brake cleaner $2 at Wally World cheap stuff, spray all around and in behind the bolt hold open or Kerosene and scrub that sucker with a stiff tooth brush make sure you get some in behind it working it back and forth as you do.

That cosmoline is like glue even just a little bit causes problems anywhere on an SKS,you should be able to move it back and forth freely with your finger when its clean up and down the channel it rides in.  Reassemble and try it, the empty mag should push it up when you pull the bolt back and hold it open then lube it with some rem oil but not overly.

"you should be able to move it back and forth freely with your finger"

When you say IT I think I know what you are talking about.  That little tiny black piece with a notch on it that movies when the backside of the mag is inserted, am I right?  It is hard to explain it.  I have a detachable mag though.  It was the way I bought it.  After reading how people feel about Detachable mags I am looking everywhere for a fixed mag (preferably not plastic).

Anyway that little black thing will hold the bolt carrier back ONLY if I myself pull it up to hold it back.  If I had a fixed mag I would not have to do that?  Thanks for the help.

Edit:  Oh, and I have cleaned it.  I took a can of solvent and blew all the cosmo out of it.  It sounds LOADS better.  But still, I have that problem.

Sounds like its the mag it may not have a follower that pushes up the bolt stop when it  empty.  I have Tapco 20 Rd. detachable's and they do hold the bolt open empty or when the last Rd fires.  Going to work later.
