Well, I decided since my SKS is the last centerfire I own, it needed a scope. Having no money beyond the price of admission, Me, $5 and an old Yugo Mauser Bayo that I have no use for, headed to the show. The intent was to trade for a mount for one of the various scopes I have laying around in boxes. Well, the only taker on a trade was a cheap chinese weaver topped receiver cover type. I was underwhelmed. The instructions said it might be slightly long with the intent that the installer would lightly file to final fit. I got it home and took off my original cover, and replaced it with this one. It went right on without filing. ![]() Well, surprise was the word of the day. I pushed on it, pulled on it, this way and that. It didn't budge. Totally rock solid. No movement at all. It must be a tick thinks I? I took it off, and then put it back on again. Still, same result, no movement, went on the same as before and again, rock solid!!! This must be a trick. Either that or I got the one single cover that was out of " spec " just enough to be a perfect fit on my rifle. No Drilling, no tapping, no damaging my Yugo. This might work out ok. |
I just can't figure it. I woke up this morning to check it again, convinced the thing would develope rock or wobble overnight. Nope, still rock solid. The downside is I can't figure out what brand it is in order to reccomend it. It was a plain blue box. Now, the rings that came with it were absolute complete crap. At least some things are true to form. |

Not to rain on your parade, but... The proof of wobble comes when you sight it in and it STAYS sighted in. I've had two SKS mounts that seemed solid, but would not hold zero. If you do have one that holds zero and can be detached and replaced with minimal zero change, then my hats off to you, as you have defied tremendous odds. |

Well, I traded another member for gasp an NCStar 4x30 compact SKS scope, it already had rings on it. Attatched and off to the range we went. Once there, I realized the scope was canted in the rings. I canted the rifle and zeroed anyway so as not to waste the trip. Well, it was two feet left, one foot low. I did get it zeroed and it held zero. 2 to 3" groups with a mixed bag of ammo so not bad. I had forgotten how truly mild the recoil on an SKS is. Well, home, found allen wrench of appropriate size and corrected the cant. Also moved the scope 1" forward on the rail for eye relief. This will negate stripper clips so I suppose I could get a slip on butt pad if I decide this is an issue. I guess its back to the range when I can to re-zero. Then I will try some off and on tests. Now I gotta find someone who will trade me some x39 for some 30-06 ammo so I can actually have enough to shoot. |
