Hello,
Several months ago i sent Troy two builds. One was a build which was partially completed with headspace issues and the other was a new build on a romanian receiver. Both builds are SBR's. on Form 1's. first build... I asked Troy to do the following: 1) correct headspace 2) shorten bbl 3) refinish 4) 100% inspection and fix anything he found that needed attention When the Krink was sent back to me it looked great then i noticed that the paint was flaking off in several areas....from top cover down around rivet at rear trunion, around mag well. and selector did not "wear" through the paint....it just flaked it off the rifle. It appeared that the receiver may not have been properly prepped before painting. The next day i went to range and had 60 malfunctions out of 200rds fired using Wolf 60gr HP. Needless to say i was not happy.I contacted Troy and he offered to correct all issues with both function and finish at no cost although i offered to pay for any repairs which were needed. From the very beginning i told Troy money was NOT an issue to me.Several weeks went by and i received the Krink back.Troy had made several mods to help functioning as well as refinished the entire rifle. I decide to wipe the rifle down and put her in the safe when i noticed that by just wiping the front trunion with a silicon cloth that the paint was once again just falling off around the bbl ret. pin and a small area on the front trunion.Although i was not happy with this, it was not really that bad and i contacted Troy just to find out what i could use to touch this up....no big deal. Well today i came home to find my second build/project sitting on my front porch. I opened it to find that no work had been completed?? I received no e-mails.letters. or phone calls to let me know why it was returned to me. So i must assume that Troy may feel that i was being "picky" about his work and decided not to do the project? Who knows? Am i being "picky" to wait months for a build just to have the paint flake off...even after the second refinish? Do Krinks only feed FMJ and not HP ammo? MOST IMPORTANTLY...why were both NFA weapons returned with no signature required and left on my front porch unattended? The first time the first build was sent, it was held at UPS for me to pick up....the second time it was returned to me i just got home to find the UPS truck there dropping off my SBR with no signature required.....if i would not have arrived who knows how long it would have been on the porch until i noticed it.The last build although not complete is still an NFA item and it was left on my front porch ALL day unattended until i got home to find it. I was VERY UNHAPPY about this....TWICE an NFA Form 1 weapon was left sitting on my porch....no e-mails.letters or phone calls were made to let me know to expect them...if they would have been stolen, i would not have even known about it. I know EVERYONE talks highly about Troy's work and in my conversations with him, he seems to be a great guy.....but i have a few questions for him 1) Why was the Romanian (Russian AKS-74U Clone) build returned? I have invested over 1400.00 just in the parts for this project.....just to have it returned after you have had it for 5 months. 2) Why were NFA items on approved Form 1's shipped in a manner which would permit them to be left unattended on front porch all day? |
First I'm not UPS. I mark them signature required and both times were insured for over 1,000.00 this alone requires a signature according to UPS rules. The long wait was the pending form one time. The rifle you sent me was COMPLETELY assembled by someone else, I Did not build the rifle. The company YOU work for did. It would close on a no-go gauge with room to spare. When it left my shop the first time, I fired a full mag of FMJ through it without a hitch. Your problems occured with hollow point ammo. Upon return We adjusted the mag heigth to better feed HP ammo and we refinished the entire weapon. Upon your request we e-mailed you the coating we used. You advised you would "just touch it up." We included a letter explaining this with your parts. It was appearant we could not meet your quality standards in a time frame where we didn't get a phone call every day so we decided to return your parts with a recomendation of two other builders from THIS board that might assist you. AK-USA which is very close to you and Ted Marshall. We have used NO hostile words nor actions toward you BUT! It is my choice who I build a rifle for and you are not going to be one of those people.
Ask how many other people have had their parts returned unassembled on this board. Your credit card will be credited with the full amount tomorrow. Troy Sellars IN RANGE inc. |

Troy,
I stated clearly that the first build was partially completed by someone else and that it had headspace issues before you received it. I also stated what i asked you to do to it. As you were not the original builder, i did not hold you responsible for functioning problems eventhough i asked you to do a 100% check on the build. My main complaint was due to the flaking paint. You CANNOT dispute this....the paint was flaking off BADLY in several areas and im sure anyone who saw this would agree.Yes, you did refinish the rifle as promosed and it looks much better but it is still flaking off slightly but this can be touched up by me. There was no letter included with my returned rifle and parts nor have i received one via the USPS as of yet.You say that you could not meet my quality standards???...is asking for a rifle which has paint not flaking off too high of a standard for you...I only wish i took pics so i could post them....such as the paint which flaked off from the top of the receiver down past the top rivet of the rear trunion. This was NOT minor flaking...the paint did NOT adhered to the receiver and the paint began to flake off with only minor handling. My complaint of you having the second build for 5 months has nothing to do with the form 1 approval. It has to do with you simply returning it to me after said period of time without completing it. This was 5 months of wasted time now that you have chosen not to complete it. Next, you make it sound like i called you every day which is NOT true. After i sent you the first build, i waited nearly 1 1/2 months before calling then called about a month or so later. The only reason i called you a few times after that was to ask questions pertaining to the second build so as to get your expert advise on how to make it as close to a Russian AKS-74U as possible. Never once did i bad mouth you or post anything negative about you in regards to the paint issue.I even offered to pay you for your services as well as pay shipping both ways to cover your expense. Then after receiving it back the second time with minor paint issues i only asked you very nicely for a reccomendation for a touch up paint and in return i get my second build sent back uncompleted.Yes, i complained about the paint but i do not feel that this justifies you returning a build which you sat on for 5 months.....I find it hard to believe that you would return a build after 5 months just because of legitimate complaints to previous work you performed and you even admitted that you didnt do it right the first time. In addition, i tried to contact you via phone to touch bases with you on the paint and functioning issues to let you know i was not upset with your work but rather just wanted to talk with you about it. I also sent e-mails asking you to call me so we could talk over the phone but you NEVER called and it was obvious you did not intend to talk with me about it. If we would have talked this over on the phone you may have had a different perspective on the situatuion instead of the one you presently have. |
not to sound like an ass but.... it really sounds like you managed to pissoff 1 of the best ak builders in the us
Hey guys,
I know Troy has a loyal following and everyone speaks highly of him...thats why i chose him.I have seen many pics of his builds and they all looked great BUT when he puts a finish on my first project that simply flakes off with minor handling, i find it unacceptable. As stated, the second time was much better with only minor problems that i could touch up myself.....no big deal. Would you be happy with paint which flakes off completely around rear of receiver down 1/2" of the receiver, etc? Maybe mine was a fluke....but that doesnt change the fact that the paint did not adhere to the receiver.Im sure no one would like to come home and find their Form 1 SBR just sitting on their front porch either.... whether it was a mistake on Troys part or the UPS. If i pissed Troy off by asking him to repaint my rifle (even offering to pay him to do so) or by asking him for touch up paint reccomendations ......well then i would say he gets pissd off too easily. Im not here to put Troys work down or to tell people not to use his services. If your past or future dealings with troy turn out well then thats great. |
Is it possible that we're not hearing the whole story. I agree that the finish should be perfect, especially after the long build time. And he should have "made it right".
I'm sure that the fault here was UPS. I have fedex, ups, dhl leave thousand dollar items by my door. Even if signature is required. He is not responsible for your gun after he ships it out (insured) to you. UPS is clearly at fault. |
Yes, my first C&R purchase was left on my doorstep by UPS- two mossin rifles. It was shipped "sig. required".
Troy did great work for me. Can't say anything bad about dealing with him. |
Quote:
"Is it possible that were not hearing the wholw story".... Yes, im telling the whole story....I removed the rifle from the plastic wrap and was looking it over...i opened and closed the top cover twice, inserted a bakelite mag and upon wiping it down to put into my safe, i noticed the paint was beginning to flake off. I rubbed these areas with a cloth and even more paint began to come off. Im in no way making it sound worse than it was.The problem began before i even went to the range to fire it. |
edit ...
sounds like you got some good oil on it some oils will soak in and not even sandblasting will get it back out ive had it happen befor and i couldnt get anythang to stick finaly gave up trying |
We did fix the first rifle. I don't know if it wasn't baked long enough or if we got the finish too thick or what? It was going to be at least two-three more months before we could complete the other rifle. Due to the SEAK receivers finally showing up. So instead of five phone calls a day. I decided to send his second rifle back so someone could get to it sooner. As I said before, we did a FULL refund of ALL charges.
if i was you id just send it out to be parked
and thank troy he fixed your rifle and refinished it 2x for free troy your a better man than I |
Troy, From the very beginning, i told you that time nor money was an issue with both projects. If it took 3+ months to get to me....then so be it. My complaint is that you simply returned the second build with no work completed after sitting on it for 5 months....a TOTAL waste of my time! In your last post you state that i called 5 time a day which is a TOTALLY DISHONEST statement. On the first project i called you TWICE in a 3 month period. I then contacted you about the second build. When the paint flaked off i called you 4 times in one week and left you messages to PLEASE contact me by phone....if you would return your calls, i would have needed to call only one time! Furthermore, you stated in your first post that it was UPS that made the shipping error.....you said that you shipped my package with a signature required as well as insured for over 1K. Well after talking with the local UPS here are the facts: 1) According to the UPS my package was NOT shipped with a signature required 2) According to the UPS it was insured for 900.00 and UPS does not require a signature UNLESS the sender "YOU" requests it..even if insured for said amount. 3) According to the UPS it was the "shipper" who was at fault Here are the details: View Details Status: Delivered Delivered on: 01/17/2006 4:46 P.M. Location: PORCH Delivered to: VERO BEACH, FL, US Shipped or Billed on: 01/13/2006 Tracking Number: 1Z XY9 517 03 9518 943 7 Service Type: GROUND Weight: 22.00 Lbs Honestly, at this time, i dont care who was at fault BUT after you last post which contained a very dishonest claim. i find it hard to take your word for it. I have ONLY posted the truth with no false claims or exagerations but as of your last post, you have not. |

I've done a few transactions with Troy and he's always followed through. From my experience he goes out of his way to ensure 100% satisfaction. You must have really pissed him off.

Anybody with any sales experience will tell you 3 facts about the consumer.
1. A customer who has an excellent experience will purchase from you again ...this is true for 85% 2. If you take care of a customer(immediately) who has had a bad experience he will purchase from you again soon (95%). 3. No matter what you do, there is going to be 2% that you can't make happy. period. I think this transaction exemplifies all three of these facts. I personally applaud Troy for trying to make it work, and then refunding all money. Kudos I say we all just move on. |
I had a rifle sent to my house marked in huge letters "SIGNATURE REQUIRED" only to be left on my left on my porch waiting for me when I got home. I checked to see who signed for it. Someone named D. River was the signer.
As for Inrange, just like to go say Troy was very easy to work with on my RPK build. If I were to have another AK built, Troy would be the one. |

Member since Oct 2003 and only one post Navygunner?
Sounds like you and fenemij are so close you could actually be the same person. (or maybe just a sham dupe account). |
I have read this session from top to bottom. I would and am planning on sending a Krinkov kit to Troy when I save a few more bucks to have him build me a SBR. Looks like a communication breakdown to me. Troy made it right by refunding the money. What more could you ask for. Just my .02

I do appreciate the fact that Troy made some modifications to the rifle for the functioning issue and i am planning on hitting the range this Sunday. If it runs good, i will post here and give credit were credit is due.I never asked, hinted, or even wanted Troy to refund my money as i felt he put in the time to work on it so he should be paid for his time.My first experiences with Troy were GREAT ...it wasnt until i complained about the paint that things went down hill, especially with communication via phone.Im not one of those customers who cannot be made happy.....all i wanted was to have my Krink refinished correctly....thats all. I also hate to have my dealings with Troy end in a negative way as they now have. I tried to take the higher road and called Troy so we could end things on a positive note but this is not possible as Troy has not returned my call.

Give him a chance to digest the info on this thread. I would be a little cautious about posting right away when someone made a public complaint about a product. Expecially high end one like he produces. Sounds like things will work out.
Eyegun, No we are not the same person and i do not have a sham dupe account. Im sure one of the Mods can verify this quite easily.I would NEVER resort to such childish tactics...have Jeepcreep verify this as he is site staff. I use the same board name (fenemij) on several boards. |

The post are coming from 2 different IPs. However....it is a tad bit odd that no post since Oct 03, and now has 5 Maybe he just saw the light.
Anyway...Troy has made it clear he will not work on your gun, both side have said their piece, I suggest we all move on down the road. |
I think that if Troy would have just taken the time to respond to fenemij everything could have been worked out professionally. Anyone want to verify who I am have at it. Anthony R. NG your buddy started this, he posted this not in reviews(where appropriate) but here where it would hurt Troy the most. He had less that 100 posts when he started it. Your first post was indefense of him, saying how honest he is. How are we supposed to know who he or you are? I think his goal is to hurt Troy's business. Let's review the facts, 1. fenemij sends a rifle to Troy that somebody else built and F/Ued. 2.Troy fixes it and refinishes some one elses screw up. Sends it back. 3.fenemij tries hollow points(not mispec ammo) in this abortion, doesn't feed. 4. Notices finish flakes off. Also wear through selector area, like every AK in the world. 5. Goes back to Troy. 6. Troy fixes and refinishes some one elses crap again. 7. Sends it back and the other work. 8. fenemij goes on line to trash Troy I have some questions and some comments. 1. Are you the original builder, seeing as you are an FFL07? 2. Does fenemij work for you? 3. Why continue the discussion after Troy did a %100 refund and fixed the rifle twice? I think that this is BS internet piling on. It is clear from Troy's post that fenemij called Troy frequently. As far a UPS goes, do you think that UPS will admit on line that they screwed up? Way too many stories of UPS leaving rifles w/signature required un-signed for. I believe Troy. Troy has done more than any body could expect. He took something that somebody screwed up bad, fixed and refinished it then refunded all the money. Troy will be getting all my work in the future. I've spoken to him several times and have refrences from guys whose opinion I trust. Troy is an honest guy who has made it more than right. Fenimij and NG, you guys show up here just to cause trouble. Go back to goonsnet. |

his,
The only type of rifles I build are AR variants (Look at my website) Dude back off on the coffee ,No one is out to get anyone. I know Troy must be a good builder, there are a lot of people very happy with is work. fenemij knew no other way to get his attention, that simple. This is exactly why for 3 yrs I didn't post on AR15.COM |
firedog51d, Tony (NavyGunner) is NOT the builder of the Krink i sent to Troy nor do i work for him. The Krink was build by a friend who i work with....he is an excellent machinest who's hobby is AK's.The build was NOT done by the company we work for.My friend did very nice work except the headspace was excessive.Troy removed the bbl and shortened it and corrected the headspace as well. Concerning the paint......it does NOT matter who built the rifle, the paint was not applied properly by Troy or it would not have flaked off.I realize that the selector wears thru the finish on ALL AK's BUT mine was not wear...it came off leaving "flakes" on my table and it completely flaked off almost 1/2" down the side of the receiver leaving large areas of exposed metal. I posted here to share my experience....whether good or bad.....thats why these forums exist. This thread began several days before i even knew Troy intended to refund my money. Although i did not expect or want Troy to refund my money, i commend him for doing so as well as for making the mods to help the functioning. As far as im concerneed, this thread is a dead horse |
WHAT!!....that is the craziest statement I have ever heard!....ooops one small problem, that could have had catastrophic results....but it was very nice work otherwise. |
I AGREE WITH YOU.......but other than the headspace issue he did do nice work |

We have a feedback forum here. If you have feedback that's where to post it not here.
I'm glad you cleared up who built the rifle. It certainly looks bad picking on the guy who fixed a potentially dangerous issue with your rifle. I think who built it does matter. What the other builder did or didn't do might well have an effect on the paint. I find it hard to believe that some one as experianced as Troy incorrectly prepped a rifle TWICE! NG, you say that threads like this are why you don't post here yet this is the only thing you have posted on. Your first 2 posts jumping in to support an other unknown guy smack of . You say your here just to support your freind who was being attacked. Yet he is the one who started this in the wrong place. Femenij, if you wanted honest feedback and opinions on this you could have posted the story w/o names. NG you admit that this was to get Troy's attention. That makes it trolling or personal. Either way wrong time, wrong place. |

So it IS possible to polish a turd. |

Wow I cannot understand these types of posts....why we even have these types of infantile posts is beyond my scope of understanding.
fenemij you know if you have a problem then let the full disclosure and topic of concern be directed to the business offline, and give them a chance to help you. I think INRANGE has more than, and to be honest, gone to the ends of the earth to HELP YOU. I have complete confidence in INRANGE. They communicate, are trustworthy, take pride in their work and will bend over backwards to HELP someone out. This is my experience. Chipping paint, the dog had kittens, the rounds went in backwards, my girlfriend left me for a blind man.....the list can go on forever. Now you just look stupid, since Troy in the right to voice his opinion factually, tells the story and has done exactly what I would have done. Here's your money please have a blessed life, I'm over it. Good g-d what were you thinking when you posted that diatribe? Troy build my AKSU-74 way back when on a Form 1. He did a fantastic job. He is courteous, considerate, informative, quality conscious, with one rare exception in this world, he is honest and in this case shrewd and smart. I find your post appaling and you do owe him and apology here since your problems and issues as posted really do not reflect accuracy. No pun intended. Therein lies the 64 million dollar question, truth be told. Something to think about next time you have a problem with a business that really does not exist, as that proprietors problem. Nah that would not occur again for someone like yourself? Do us all a favor when next time comes, please call that vendor/business and just work it through on your own instead of chastizing a good person, that it is not responsible in the first place. Take some 1200 Engine paint semi gloss black, remove the wood, tape off the butt and spray. Hang to dry, two light coats. Wait a day or so, then hang in the oven stripped. Set temp at 90-120 degrees and bake for 20 mins. Turn off oven, and let it cool on its own. Take out, hang in safe etc; do not touch for 5 days. Paint will cure and anything residue will evaporate. Use terry cloth hand towel and wipe down. Your done. If you like send out and have ARS paint it...oooops Moly Coat. Thank you very much........ |
All this talk about how horrible the flaking was but not one pic. Just a lot of talk, and we all know that talk is cheap.
In Troys 2nd post, he acknowledged that there was indeed a problem with the paint he applied. This is a dead issue. |
You got your full refund with a working rifle. Adapt and overcome (move on).
Good for you Troy, you went above and beyond by giving a full refund. That is the sign of a professional. |
I'd still like to see a pic.
I predict that most people here would not think the 'flaking' is as bad as it is being made out to be. If you need help posting a pic, email it to me and I'll do it for you. |
Eyegun,
I can understand where you are coming from.....the 1st finish was the bad one which has been refinished by Troy. The second finish that Troy applied, as i stated previously, is MUCH better...it had only minor flaking around the bbl. ret. pin area which i touched up. I have taken no pics and therefor have none to post.I was able to make it to the range on Sunday and put 180rds downrange with only 1 minor hickup using Wolf FMJ.......so needless to say, i am happy with the functioning.Everyone here, including myself, has spoken their piece of mind and i feel that this horse has taken its last breath |
"i feel that this horse has taken its last breath"
really? You seem to keep dragging it out. Now you're hedging that the flaking wasn't all that bad. Just as I thought. Thank you for the closure. |
heLet's see if this is true hmmmmmmm |
