What would be the proper mags, sling, mag pouch, etc to go along with a MAADI? I know the MAADI is as close to a true Russian AKM as you can get, but did the Egyptians make mags, pouches, etc. or did they just use available com bloc stuff? Just wondering, cause I haven't seen to many MAADI or Egyptian items. Occasionally you might see a Egyptian bayonet (brown handle) but VERY RARE! Anybody know? I need some ideas on what type of mags will look best with my INTRAC MAADI.......when it's finished....... |
| The slings are fairly common. They are a cheap looking green cotton sling with black hardware. The mags look like most Euro mags except they are stamped Made in Egypt, and spray paineted with what looks like Krylon. I only have 1 left or I would offer to sell it to you. the sling is a dark green type, as for the mag.......it's a european style mag, if you want that "egyptian look" just take a can of black gloss enamel spray paint, wait for a dust storm to come up, and spray paint it  I've only seen one mag pouch that was made it egypt......and it was a poor piece of workmanship, made from somekind of cheap and flimsy canvas type of material. |

An Egyptian AK was the first rifle I ever had the pleasure of looking down the business end of! I'm kind of fond of them myself! The Egyptians use an odd mixture of gear. They produced their own AKMs, and either imported DDR folders or made their own. I've heard both. The mags I handled were identical to any Soviet AKM mag I've seen anywhere else in the world. That doesn't mean they didn't make their own also. Bayonets are rare, even amongst the soldiers I worked with. They were locally made, with a dark brown late AKM style handle. The scabbard was the older metal type with a black rubber insulator, if it was still present. The leather hangers had normally been replaced by who knows what. I also ran across some Soviet bayonets as well. Mag pouches were again a mixture. I did see Soviet pouches as well as what I assume were locally made pouches. Most were in such bad shape they barely held the mags. From memory I recall seeing chest pouches as well as 4 mag pouches with a shoulder strap. The police had AK holsters built into their camel saddles! Their ammo pouches and holster were as gaudy as anything you see being used by the locals in Afghanistan! I'm sorry I can't give you a more definitive answer. Depicting an Egyptian rig is going to depend on the era and the unit. If you're looking at the days before the Soviets were expelled, Soviet gear would have been used. Today, Iraqi battlefield pick-ups would be accurate, at least in image. I'm sure there are better equiped units out there though. |
| the soviets sold the egyptians the machinary and gave them a licence to produce their own AK.......which is kinda rare, as the soviets usually sold AKs to their allies, and "friends", not machinary and licence to make their own. as for mags........they may have produced their own, but I'm betting a vast majority of them were sold to the egyptians as some sort of trade agreement, or military assistance. |
