The local gunstore has a few unconverted Siagas on hand, a few in 7.62x39 and one in 308, in the $200-250 price range.

How do the converted ones stack up? Worth the cash to have them built up? accuracy?

They're good.  You're only chance to get a "real Russian".

Convert it thyself.

From "pistol grip conversion" to "mag conversion"...so you can use standard AK mags.  See link.

Hey Treelander

Thats the tutorial I used to do my 20ga Saiga. All went smooth as silk.

Like new 20ga $225.00 (bought it from a pawn shop) and $92.85 in parts from RPB.

I'm lovin it!

If you can get a 308 for under 3 bills you'd better grab it.

I have 3 siagas now, down from five.

I'd buy more if I could, but I have to feed the ones I have

Or any of them, if 308 is not your style, do 223/7.62

I didnt know to look for them before.  I'll go back this weekend.
Am I hoping they they have dimples or not?

I think I paid $309.00+tax $335.09 total for my .308.  No dimples on a .308.

I paid $239.99 + tax for the 7.62x39 with no dimples.

The conversion of the .308 is pretty easy.  Took me 3 hours to complete the rifle including touchup of paint under the trigger plate.  I took the BHO out as it got in the way of the relocated trigger.  No feed ramp needed and hi-caps are available.  I would get one of these before they disappear or go up in price.

Archived thread about mine.

If I purchase a Saiga rifle in 7.62x39 and convert it to military specs I have three questions.

1. Will I be able to use the steel AK-47 mags I already have?

2. Will older wooden, possibly Russian furniture fit on it? Or do I have to go the more modern all plastic route?

3. For anyone that has done the conversion, how is the accuracy? 2-3 MOA, 4-6 MOA or Minute of Man?

Thanks!
Cheers,

PS-forgot 4th question can you REQUEST that a rifle has dimples from a place like Atlantic Firearms?

With some mods to the rifle (bullet guide) and the mags, yes.

2. Will older wooden, possibly Russian furniture fit on it? Or do I have to go the more modern all plastic route?

I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, possibly with a bit of work... and that's all I know the answers to.

For the definitive scoop, go to Saiga-12 Forum.

1. yes.  Installing a feed ramp and perhaps trimming the mag catch are all that's needed

2. yes any stndard stamped receiver stock set will fit

3. these rifles are very well made and accurate, but your results may vary depending on the ammo that you use.  Expect 2-3 MOA wiht wolf.  I expect the rifle to be as accurate as the ammo you use.

To use regular AK handguards you will need to change out the gas tube and install a handguard retainer for the lower handguard.  That will involve pressing off the gas block and FSB or using dinzag's custom retainer at about $70.00.

The ones with dimples are few and far between.  If you don't find a dealer with them in stock you most likely won't get one unless you find it on the EE.

Seems to be the newer batch of 20" 223 Saiga's have the dimples.  It seems really light to handle.  I fell in love at first sight.  Plus you can modify the gun to use unmodified 5.56 mags and ak74 mags with modfied followers(cheap).

But the 308 makes for a nice conversion.  It doesn't have the same transfer bar trigger, so you don't end up with 4 holes in the sides of your receiver to tig up.

The good RSA triggers for the 308 (listed as VEPR 308) costs more than the standard RSA but should be worth the money. (edit - tried it and the regular works just fine) I love the RSA in my 223.
If you use one, make sure you fill or cover the rivet hole just aft of the trigger.  One of the adjustment screws landed right on the hole.
