on some pics Ive seen of both the saigas and the vepr it looks like the triger guard goes all the way to the back of the reciever but the pic of the ones with pistol grip the trigger looks farther forward...

True on Saigas. I've never seen a VEPR this way. The reason is because the trigger is moved back to allow the use of a monte carlo type stock. The mag catch housing and trigger guard are not connected.

Unconverted Saigas have the trigger system moved to the rear of the reciever to allow for the "sporter" stock grip. There is no pistol grip.
