So I demilled my Saiga .223 in about 35 minutes, mocked up the trigger guard, pistol grip and buttstock. I know what fasteners I need and know how to put a new FCG back in. The question is,I bought a KVAR 5.56 bullet guide, so I can use Hi-Cap mags, but I cannot get that thing to fit for anything. I ground it down, polished it but no go. Any suggestions? what do I need to do to use Hi-Caps in this beast? Pics will be up on Friday to show my progress. Thanks guys. |
| I did the same thing and ended up making one out of pipe that works 100% even though it does not sound as techy. I just could not get the thing to work for me. There is a web sight on Saiga conversions that describes how to make one out of pipe. If you search enough you should be able to find it and if you can not post that you can not find it and I will try to look for it as well. The key thing is to be patient and be able to set it down and walk away for a bit. I made mine at an angle that will feed HPs and FMJs out of Galil orlite mags and converted 74 mags with the Robinson followers. I kept all my Bulgies for my Vepr. I mounted an ACE stock and Galil grip with a G2 trigger and it is a blast. To get the angle of the feed ramp I just kept playing with it hand feeding it until I got it to work and if you screw a piece of pipe up so what it is cheap just becareful with the rifle. LOL I almost like my Saiga as much as my Vepr almost and I like my Saiga better than my AR. With that Galil stock and handgrip and Galil mags it looks realy cool. |
| The kvar 5.56 bulletguide is for use in the bulgarian 5.56 ak. The Bulg 5.56 is AKM (large bolt pattern). The Rus 5.56 is 74 (small bolt pattern). Follow the previous suggestions for fitting the bfg. For the mags to properly seat you will need to remove approx. 1mm from the underside of the trunion. Use a mill or use a dremel and check frequently for fit. |
So I need to get the 5.45 bullet guide? Hungarian 7.62 20 rounders fit perfectly. |
| You can still use the 5.56 bfg you bought just mod it to fit. Regarding the trunion a lot of people will file down the top of the mag (see modifying weiger mag sticky). IMO the proper method is to mod the trunion. If youve already installed the tguard try to install a 5.45/5.56 mag and you will notice it will not fully seat or lock in place. For mags I used converted 5.45 mags, if you dont know they are very easy to mod and 100% in my experience. Ive done 3 5.56 saiga conversions and have had 3 SAR3 so Im pretty up on the 223 AKs. Ive since sold them all but am wanting another .223 saiga when they are imported again. |
| Got the saiga modded up. KVar furniture, worked on some Russian plum 5.45 mags, got them to fit. They won't feed with the 5.45 follower in them, but will with the factory .223 Saiga follower in them. Where can I get Followers for these mags? Robarm is out of stock. |
| If you compare a 5.56 bulgy and a 5.45 bulgy mag you will see that the follower is the same. The difference is that the follower rides higher in the 5.56 mag. The main difference between the 5.45 mag and the 5.56 Robinson Arms follower is the the RobArm follower is taller (make up for not riding as high in the mag). Now Ive never done this but if you could thin the inside of the mag at the top the follower would then ride higher and should work. Another alternative would be to thin the sides of the mag follower. I wouldnt bother with either of the above and would attempt to find the robarm followers. Goodluck. |
+1 I have seen followers that people have used JB Weld on to put the bump on the back of the follower but I would hold off and try to find some Robinson followers or .223 mags. Sometimes things will not hand feed but will when the gun is cycling while shooting also. Many people have said that if you load the 74 mags with 15 or 20 rds they work but if you go more than 20 they bind up. I never tried that though. |
