A local gun shop has several 16" and 22" .308's at $325 for either. I never gave them a second look until today - didn't realize they were .308's honestly. I'm an AR fan by design, but these have somehow grown on me. I don't know anything about them.
I'm sure there is a plethora of info on the subject out there in the matrix, but I thought I'd expose my naivity here. I beg your forgiveness for my ignorance in advance... but any helpful guidance or website referrals would be appreciated.

Expected accuracy for either length - ?MOA @ 100yds?

Work with any commercial .308 round (i.e. Win/Fed/Rem)?

Durability - bore life-expectancy in rounds?  Type of barrel steel?

Noise level of 16" version?

After-market triggers?

Reliability issues - FTF, FTE, etc?

Recoil impulse - compared to ??

Thanks folks.

I guess I should mention that I did a ARFCOM search and found some vague answers to some of the questions I asked above. I figured the relevant posts to my questions were answered long ago when the rifles first came out and have long since fallen off the archive. I've also found a few articles via gioogle, but not much.

Anybody got anything they'd like to share re: the questions?? It's a chance to persuade an AR guy to take a walk on the Russian side folks!

2-3 MOA with surplus ammo, which is just fine for a battle rifle. I can hit a 8" gong at 300 yards with ease using irons

yes

Durability - bore life-expectancy in rounds?  Type of barrel steel?
Made in a Russian militarysmall arms factory, Iszmash, probably 10,000+, barrels are chrome lined

Noise level of 16" version?
I have the 22

After-market triggers?
Red Star Arms perhaps, most will probably do a pistol grip conversion.  I have the stock trigger, and it is... different, but not too bad once you get used to it

Reliability issues - FTF, FTE, etc?
AK reliability- 100% all the time

Recoil impulse - compared to ??
Moderate- it's a 308, the wod stock models come with a nice rubber pad!  the polymer would bump you a bit more.  All the more reason to convert it to use a choate dragunov stock!
see the sticky at the top of the forum for info on large capacity mags

Thanks folks.

Much obliged, MRWhatAKDiscussions board this topic/question:

" .308 Win and 7.62 NATO SAIGA compatiblity?
As I understand things, the SAAMI specs are quite different for these two rounds.
.308 Win ammo/chambers have a significantly higher pressure than it's NATO counterpart and .308 ammo is typically NOT recommended for use in weapons chambered for 7.62 NATO (FAL, VEPR, Galil etc).  I was considering a .308 SAIGA and was wondering where it is named ".308 SAIGA", does this also refer to it's chamber design (.308 Win) according to SAAMI specs?"

I know you answered above and I guess I mislead the intention *(unintentionally he
Thanks again

I've shot both 308 and 7.62 nato in my Saiga 308 as well as my CETME and a bolt action Winchester 70.  I don't see a difference.

The saigas are military rifles that have been cosmetically neutered, it will take the military load just fine!
