Posted this on the build it yourself board w/ almost no response.  Maybe someone here can help:

I've built about 4 ARs and decided I need an AK project. Did a search of the board for some cool stuff and I want to take a Saiga and add a pistol grip, folding stock and fix it to accept standard AK mags. I need a quick summary of the legal issues. And I need to know mechanically how to get the thing to accept mags, pistol grip and folder. I did a search here but the info seemed dated. Where's a good start on legal issues and mechanics?

Thanks!

I assume your talking about the saiga rifles so Im not sure on what parts count you need. Im guessing the same as the AK. Before you do the conversion Id highly recommend the shephards hook replacement retaining plate from redstararms. www.redstararms.com/ it will make the conversion go much smoother.

This link should have info on the legal questions you have  forum.saiga-12.com/

This link has a step by step for converting to pistol grip and I believe towards the end it covers the conversion so your saiga can accept standard AK mags  www.cross-conn.com/Saiga_Conversion/

Also, do yourself a favor and invest in a dremel if you dont have one and some cutoff wheels and grinding stones. Its much easier for a novice to grind the rivet heads off than it is to drill them out IMO.

Thanks!  What is a shepherd's hook retaining plate?  Can't find it on their site?

I do have a dremel.  Is that really all it takes?

About 3/4 down the rsa front page, if you have a rack of AKs and change triggers then you'll learn the crook wire, but for just one AK this plate is a big bargain!

Retainer Plate
New product from Red Star Arms replaces the bent wire Shepherd's Crook. This steel plate installs in less than 5 seconds and holds the hammer and trigger pins in your Kalashnikov secure. Forget about fighting with the retaining wire. Not only can you frustrate yourself and scratch your firearm trying to route the retaining wire, but if it is not installed properly your gun will malfunction.Similar to retainer plates used in the FAL and in some modern Russian Kalashnikovs, the RSA Hammer/Trigger pin retainer plate will work in nearly all Kalashnikovs. It can replace any style of retaining wire and will make installing, adjusting, tuning, or cleaning your trigger group a much easier job.

Please note. If you have an OOW receiver select the OOW option in the pull down list.

Thanks!  It looks like the only difficult parts are drilling a hole for a pistol grip and modifying the folding stock to fit the saiga.  How difficult or easy is that?  I don't wanna screw up a new gun

The toughest parts for me were
1) getting the stock trigger pins out - the sheppard's crook is one strong mother of a spring
2) cutting out the spot welds that held the trigger guard plate on the bottom of the receiver.  I burned up two TiN drill bits even though I was using cutting oil and light pressure.  Then I got a tungsten-carbide cutting bit for my dremel that cut through the spot welds almost  like butter.

The cross-conn website is the best guide for the conversion.  The .308 and I think the shotguns are alittle different, but not enough to throw most people off.
