All, I just acquired a VEPR K .223 w/o brake in a trade. Nifty shooting gun - but I am an M4 guy..... I have been surfing/researching for the last couple of days, but I still have some unanswered questions. Little help please. 1) Is the only option for a muzzle brake the one sold by Robinson or is it possible for a gunsmith to thread the barrel (possibly removing and replacing the front sight assembly) to place an AK74 type brake on? What are my options here and will it be legal? 2) Ultimak kit or stick with the receiver scope mount system? I have an Aimpoint/ACOG NSN quick detach setup on my M4 with RAS II - so I have a couple of options here. Opinions? 3) Am I correct in assuming that my stock and forearm options are very limited? Milled stock sets? 4) Hornady 75 grain TAP ammo is my duty load for my M4 - does anyone have any experience with this out of the VEPR's 1/9 twist barrel? 5) Painted finish....... already peeling around the muzzle area.....no big whoop as this will be a plinking/fun gun for me... Anyone have any suggestions/experience for painting the gun? opinions, suggestions - any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!! |

The Robarm brake is the best option in my opinion, but a gunsmith should be able to put anything on you want, and if it's permanently attached, it's okay. I have heard mixed results on the Ultimak. Apparently it gets hot sitting up on the gas tube affecting zero and sometimes is difficult to fit. You can fit any rail mounted optic on the Vepr. Take a look at the Russian Kobra red dot sight. Very robust and reliable. Often the russian optics are just as good as the US military equivalents, but cost far less. go to www.nightvisionweb.com or www.kalinkaoptics.com. cdnninvestments.com has weaver mounts that will fit the rail and allow you to use a standard scope. Search this site for a guy named Tantal for his web site. He's by far the best guy to order russian optics from. you're kinda stuck with the furniture. The Vepr has an angled cut on the rear of the reciever which precludes standard furniture. The only other option would be a Choate dragunov buttstock. no info on the ammo, but anything that will function in a chrome lined 5.56 1/9 barrel will work. on the finish, don't use gun scrubber! |

Thanks a million for the reply MRW. I hear you on the Robarm brake. If for nothing else besides aesthetic reasons, you HAD to have an AK74 style brake -which setup would you choose? That Tantal dude (super nice guy by the way)sent me an email just prior to your response - he mentioned 1)adaptors, 2)replacing the entire front sight assembly with one that is already threaded and 3)welding on the brake directly to the existing crown as seperate options. Can that entire front sight post be removed? Wouldn't that be the best course of action for sturdiness reasons? I thought that their were a lot of options for M4's........ Sheesh..... Thanks again for your patience and help. |

NIce gun, good ergonomics, but stock set options are not a cheap and simple swap on this model. Several good shops like ak-103.com and Investment Grade Firearms make bbl adaptors which you slip over the muzzle, twist on the brake, line everything up, and tack weld onto the front sight base. Pay attention to 22 or 24 mm thread rate matches, and it is a US parts count issue at least until this fall... Red Star Arms tried hipower league shooting with a VEPR 20" last year, and the report should still be on their web site. |
