I am considering the Saiga 308 but have some general questions. What type of receiver is on the Saiga? How reliable are the Saiga rifles as opposed to VEPR? |

The 308 saiga is built on the same 1.5mm RPK receiver as a VEPR. The 308 Saiga is essentially the same thing as a VEPR. Both are built from essentially the same specs. One is built by MOLOT and the other is built by Izshmash, both of which are small arms factories in Russia. The VEPR has a nicer finish and is set up in the traditional pistol grip style. VEPR mags are twice as much ($40) as Saiga mags ($20). VEPR mags hold 10 rounds while the Saigas hold 8 (but can easily be converted to hold 10) I own both rifles, both wood stocked-long barrel, and can honestly say that the Saiga is by far the better deal, and gives up nothing in terms of accuracy, reliability, and functionality to the VEPR. If the Saigas had been available when I bought my VEPR I would have bought TWO Saigas instead. Both rifles are utterly reliable and I have shot both of them at extended ranges with great accuracy. Just last month I could consistently smack a 2' gong at 300 yards with iron sights using Portugese surplus ammo, and my eyes suck! Buy one! (or two) You won't regret it! |
