How are Saigas magazine wells converted to accept normal ak series magazines?  Is there any milling  involved?
Also, anyone with any personal experiances with
Vulcan Arms weapons, v47?

Well as far a I know there is nothing that needs to be done to the mag well, what you have to do is file your mag latch a wee smidge  for hi-caps to lock in place and add a feed ramp to insure smooth operation. That is of course after you add the required number of US parts which for my  Saiga build was 5 US parts. This was on a 7.62x39 chambered weapon I suppose the .223 could be different but I suspect doing the above mods that a mag would lock in place no problem also . I will be finding out sometime because I plan to get a .223 version and convert it to 5.45x39. HTH

The problems I had with my new Saiga in 7.62x39 were the same as yours. I did NOT want to modify the rifle in any way, IE: file mag latch or install a feed ramp. -- The ATF states in Law & legal opinions, ATF letter 26 that a high cap mag (over 10 rds.) can be used in ANY semiauto rifle as long as the mag was mfg prior to 9/14/94.  You can make minor modifications to the mags as long as they will still function in the rifle they were designed for. --- An AK mag in a Saiga needs approx. .020" filed off the catch on the bottom side of the mag to fit the mag latch.  As it has no feed ramp, the cutout in the front of the mag lets the round feed 1/8" too low. I welded a pc of 1/8" welding rod in the cutout, which makes the front of the mag flush with the sides.  The 2 modifications to the AK mags allow them to work perfect in the AK-47 or the Saiga. Just my 2$ worth, good shooting, ALLONS11

Um, I may be a total ignoramus here, but as I understand it, if you weld up the cutout to make the front flush with the sides the mag WILL NOT fit (much less feed) in a standard AK-47.  The feed ramp in the regular AK-47 sits INSIDE that cutout in the mag.  Therefore any mag with the cutout filled up is a felony (post ban hicap mag).  Have you actually used the modified mag in a stock '47 to test it?

Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.

MRW, I only have 1 AK-47. It's an old one I brought back with me in 1968.  The man I got it from had no further use for it.  The mags fit in it with the modifications stated above.  As to making a felony (post ban high cap mag), I should have said the law states that you can make MINOR modifications as long as the mag will still function in the rifle it was designed for "With The Modifications Removed".  This is what Oly is doing with the old Sten Mags with the square tube welded on them.  Remove the tube and they still function in a Sten gun. As I welded the 1/8" rod on the ends only (to sides of mag) you could remove it with a pair of pliers. The purpose of my post was to suggest a legal, cheap, easy way to have Hicaps for a Saiga rifle.  If a person feels uncomfortable with this, I sure would'nt do it. Good Shooting, ALLONS11
