I'm getting closer to converting my Dad's Saiga.  7.62x39 Saiga in hand, got a Bonesteel fokding stock, Kvar "blemished" pistol grip, and Tapco trigger.  About to order a trigger guard and retaining plate and then the fun begins.

Good deal! Keep us posted on the progress. The Saiga is a fun project. Working hard to find another one that doesn't cost too much.

My dad secretly bought this Saiga for $450.  It may be the same one the pawn shop had priced at $1200 back in March.

As simple as it gets. I enjoyed doing the easy conversion. Only other thing left I'm going to do is thread barrel and add a brake.

If you wouldn't mind, what's your technique for threading the barrel?

Putting an AK 74 fsb on is no harder than threading barrel. Without a plunger pin keeping AK tight with a crush washer is a PITA.

Using a 14x1 lh die with a TAT (thread alignment tool) to assure the threads go straight and even.

I supplied the conversion parts, he did everything.
I know the conversion is easy but for him to press off the gas block, FSB, put on a new HG retainer, notch the barrel, drill out the rivets, replace FCG,bore out the zig zag brake, FCG conversion, press on new gas block, new FSB, new rear sight leaf, and to paint the bottom to match for $100 i couldn't pass that deal up.

He has done 5-6 builds for me already and is only a few miles down the road from me.Yes, im am blessed to have a awesome builder that close by.

Well, I'm considering doing an Ultimak rail on my 5.45 conversion. I didn't touch the front half of the gun. Guess that means I'd need to put a traditional AK lower handguard on.

Also found after taking mine to the range for the first time that the rear sight leaf is bent way over to the side. Had to move the front sight post over so far, it's almost touching the guard. I'm thinking I'll get a Mojo MicroClick to replace it. I may consider the TechSights rear sight thing... but I think the Mojo will keep it simple.

Do the pinholes line up well? As I'm considering above, I may also want to change the FSB for a traditional '74 and get the brake later on. I think I'd just leave the GB alone... although I did see that rear sight base rail system thing that looks pretty nice....

I've got everything to get my dad's conversion started... but the weather is staying too cold to apply the high temperature paint for touching up the receiver, so I don't want to tear into this Saiga.

The plum furniture is really tempting me. I just bought a 7.62 from Atlantic, and when it arrives I need to choose between black or plum. My first conversion was last year, and I did Combloc Red wood furniture. This conversion is going to be poly furniture, and I had my mind set on black because there are so many more stock options. However, the plum is tempting me.....what to do, what to do.....

Well i had the same problem when i was deciding on what to do as well.

I figured black is too common, and the plum stock isnt a bright plum its more of a darker colored plum so unless the light hits it it looks black. You can still tell its plum though.Best of both imo.
Dont get the US made plum stock from K-Var, get the real deal Bulgarian from APEX.I got mine for $55.You will need to get a rear sling swivel and screws forit which you can get from desert fox.

Will get more pics soon, but I added a Parabellum Arms AKARS rail/cover and ordered a Lucid M7 to mount.

Eventually I want to get the Parabellum Arms RCS and AK-BAR and MARS.  The RCS is a gas tube replacement that has a left side non-reciprocating charging handle, with a little locking notch so you can lock the bolt open with it. The BAR is a handguard and gas tube that works with the RCS. The MARS is a magazine release with a lever that you can actuate with your thumb. Parabellum has some pretty cool shit coming!

Given the quality of the AKARS, I'm wagering the new stuff from them will be pretty nice!

PICS!  Well...one pic:

Will have to get the dot zeroed soon. Cowitness is bottom 1/3 and very usable. The M7 is a fantastic little sight. I'm at home tonight (I work nights) and played with it a bit on the rifle. The auto brightness thing REALLY WORKS. Going from a dark room into a bright room, or flipping the light on results in INSTANT response. In fact, it's almost like you don't perceive the change at all, the dot and donut just seem to appear the same brightness to you, their visibility doesn't change. I really like it. And the AKARS rail is solid. I'll definitely be getting more goodies from Parabellum Arms.

OK ill play also,  here is what I have done so far,  purchased this one with the aft complete and I am slowly working on the front:

first thing I did was remove the pins from the front sight thinking I could get it off.......wrong.  I could press it off but then I thought how would I press it back on without messing something up?

Cut off the tip with a pipe cutter

here are some of the tools I used to do this:

tip removed,  I didnt cut it long I just took a flat screwdriver and tapped it till it popped off in one piece

Here is what it looks like now

stuck the stock between my feet and started working on the threads: Ta-da

I just needed another half turn on the die and I could have lined up the muzzle but now I have to find me a crush washer....

here is the gas tube I fitted on it last night,  purchased this gem from the EE

and here is what I have so far,  just waiting on the hand guards to come in to compete it for now:

Basic Saiga-12 conversion. While I hate the look of the adjustable stock, its nice for hunting season, one notch in for a sweatshirt two notches for a heavy jacket.
Little stack of steel mags that I borrowed from work for 'testing'.

Here are some of the Saiga builds I have done since 2007, starting with most recent first, going backwards in time:  Most are ones I did for me, and two were for others. Download warning lots of pics!

First is my current saiga, my "featureless" Kalifornication version, and the second is the same 7.62 as my free America version.

Plum Crazy 7.62x39.  My favorite.

These two are the same Saiga.  The latest version fiirst.

7.62x39 Saiga

My second Saiga, a 7.62x39.  Sold it to buy a dimpled one (above)

My first Saiga, a 223. Later version first, then first effort. (2007)
