Background: Hello all the name's Tony, I have been in the AR world for years now, and have since grown tired of the caliber. I never thought I would purchase an imported rifle, let alone a Russian military rifle, but I did! I am now a proud owner of an m91/30 Mosin and I love how it beats my shoulder up! I am currently waiting for my Archangel new-era stock to ship to me with a couple 10rd box magazines. I have since become obsessed with the round and have been frantically searching for a semi-auto 54r platform. I thought the SVT-40 was my only option, until I started searching threads and forums. I have come upon the VEPR 54r and NEED one more than WANT. This will be a Fun + Practical + SHTF Weapon. I love the idea of a 54r Battle Rifle!

What I need help with:

1) It seems that the prices have gone up immensely on these $700 rifles and when I contacted a site about when they would be back, they responded with; "These are no longer in production and no orders will be made in the future."...

2) CenterFireSystems seems to be the only site with them in stock nd I have to chose bewteen two.

- 20.5" Finished Wood This is the "Notched" backed receiver and in 20.5" (Which I believe is exactly what I want for this cartridge and use)
- 20.5" Unfinished Wood This is the "Square" backed receiver in 20.5" for $300 less with throw-away wood.

I do like the wood on this weapon, but at a price of $1200 I don't think it would be worth it, as I would probably want to make this gun black with updated furniture. Is the good-finished wood on the VEPR 54r's very nice feeling, in which many of you plan to keep it on the rifle for a lifetime? Also, are there any drawbacks of the "Square" backed vs. the "Notched" back?

3) Let's say that the $800 unfinished-wood version is best, where do I go for "Square" backed pistol grip/ Buttstock and Front hand guard kits and will they run me less than the $300 I saved?

4) I want a 20.5" for my needs and purpose and would like the integrated sight not welded to the barrel for (what I would believe is better accuracy due to better harmonics). Does this style front sight take away the 3 position gas valve?

5) Who has the 10rd magazines in stock at a good price and when will a double-stack 20rd come to the market!?

Thanks for looking and here is my current arsenal!

I have ordered the square backed with unfinished wood. So, this accepts any regular ak style hand grip, butt stock and forearm? Thanks for being king and helping, I am searching through engines now for answers as well, I would just like the weapon and stock kit to arive at the same time.

Now I am looking into optics/rail/stock.hand grip. forearm grip.  All AK stocks etc will work on this VEPR 54r?

RAIL

So that would work just fine?

It'll accept standard AK stocks, but you may have to account for the Vepr's additional receiver thickness (1.6mm) by removing material from the stock where it enters the receiver of the rifle.  The need for this varies from stock to stock, just be prepared for it.  Not a big deal by any means.

You should state your budget for an optics mount, there are far better mounts than the BP-02 for additional cost (but it will be money well spent).

I'll spend $100 for a mount and $2-300 on glass.  The rest I have no idea pricing.

Better mount:  Molot

How it sits on my .308 Vepr:

That looks quite nice indeed and priced just right!  What suggestions for variable scopes?

Also, that is Out Of Stock.

The Midwest Industries AK side mount is also very nice, a lot of folks here have used them, I had one for a while and the quality was excellent.

Lots of nice glass out there, anything you would use on a bolt action is fine on the Vepr too.

Vepr factory wood is really nice (the finished wood, not the unfinished squareback stuff). Lots of folks leave the OEM stock on, I still have mine on my .308 though I did do a camo paint job on it, balance is good and ergonomics are among the better of the thumbhole factory stocks.

Damn they have a squareback 20 1/2" barrel .308 type 2 in stock, that's a helluva rifle right there, i'd buy that before i'd get the x54.....must resist.....arrrgh....

Like others have stated the square back should accept any AK stock with minor fitting if any. This is probably the easiest conversion out there if you want to ditch the thumbhole stock as the FCG is already in the correct location. The integrated sight is not welded to the barrel it is part of the gas block, a desirable feature. I didn’t think Vepr’s had an adjustable gas block.

Not the Molot that Liquidmetal posted but Primary Arms has this VOMZ in stock and it is within your budget.

Depending on your scope choice the mid-mount may not place the scope far enough forward for correct eye relief but, you never know. A picture of one mounted to a rifle would be nice to ascertain the over-all height. Though it looks like the bottom of the mount has a spacer in it that can be removed to lower the height.

So, I figured out what I wanted and where to get it, sadly I cannot get the Ronin's stock on the Square-Back receiver.

The Stock: BoneSteel's side folder/milspec tube and that will be mated to a MagPul CTR + Enhanced Buttpad + .50" CHeek Riser all in Black.

The Grip: Ronin's Molot polymer Grip in Black

The Handguard: Ronin's Polymer handguard for the Vepr.

That leaves me with an optics choice and flash hider choice (The FH pictured would be ideal if someone knows what it is? This will be used for target fun and hunting applications, so Glass is most likely needed. Also I chose the 20.5" for a more practical "Urban Battle Rifle" if that were ever to be a necessity, so nothing to massive I think, just simply state which mount and which FFP Zoom Glass to put on here (The one pictured would be the largest option and might be the one I want)? Thanks guys! (Glass < $300)

In the end I hope it to look something like this: (Quick Photo ChopShop)

The scope pictured is a "Millett 4-16x50 Tactical Riflescope, Matte Black w/ Illuminated Mil-Dot Bar Reticle BK81001 w/ Millet Angle-Loc Weaver 30mm Rings, Medium, Matte Black AL00717"

Ssually receiving 5 out of 5 and comparable to a NightForce at 70% discount.  This may be the one for me, is this FFP?

If you seriously believe that, you need to have your head checked.

I didn't want to believe any of it.  That is the reason for the posting, un-biased opinions and view on this optic would be great.  Also, my price margin is preferably < $300 so this seems like #1 right now.

The limited research I just did shows the Millet in question to be SFP.

Also, do yourself a favor:  Make sure the reticle and turrets match.  A Mil-dot reticle needs mil-rad turrets to be truly useful.

Again, my limited research shows that Mil-dot Millet has MOA turrets, far from ideal.

A Mil-dot reticle with mil-rad turrets is a beautiful thing and by far my favorite reticle/turret combo.  Learning how to use a Mil-dot reticle with mil-rad turrets is very worthwhile.

If you are looking for inexpensive glass, i've heard much better first-hand reviews of Mueller than I have Millett.
