Just picked up my VEPR II 20 inch 5,45 x 39.  Impressions: best finished AK I have ever seen; trigger is actually fairly crisp; wood is too good to junk like I had planned.  One problem––how the hell do I get the top cover off???  Between my shitty eyes and torn tendons in my thumb––I can't get the cover off. It almost looks like the "button" is bigger than the hole in the top cover.  As I have Saiga's, WASR's -Tantals-Century's-Bulgarians-and Norinco's, this leaves me a bit humbled and puzzled(pissed at myself!!).HELP!  And feel free to flame, lol.

I had a similar issue, without the bad eyes and thumb though. My Vepr requires me to push the button in and pull the cover up at the same time. I've had mine for 9 months now and it is still a tight fit.

The top cover is a much tighter fit than other AK's. They get a little easier as they get broken in. The recoil spring tab has a pretty sharp edge to it that eventually gets a little of the edge broken off.

Finally got the top cover off.  Next question––I have the 20" integrated sight model––to get the front grip off, do I just unscrew it at the sling swivel?  And if you decide to take off the muzzle nut, WEAR A MASK!  I have been blowing black crap out of my nose now for two days, and have a metal taste in my mouth....
