Anyone know if the recent Saiga 7.62x39 imports have the "stepped" chambers?  Thinking of purchasing one, but only if the chamber is correct.

I bought one when they were all suppose to have it, and mine did not. Either way it doesn't matter one bit unless you pick up all your steel casings...

Well I reload, so it's a big deal to me. Having that useless step in the chamber overworks case necks and can deteriorate accuracy.  Anyone else bought one lately?

that's completely understandable, I'm not a re-loader myself...yet. Is the steel cased stuff re-loadable?

As for the chamber, there's unfortunately no way to tell (from what I understand) with out shooting it. Is this right? I guess if you had one of those dental pick things you could feel in the chamber...

The reason for the stepped chamber I heard was to differentiate between civilian and military. I'm not sure if this is 100% accurate, but if it is, I would think that all would have this feature after it was mandated...just a guess though.

Good luck on your search and post what you find.

There are a fair amount of folks that reload 7.62x39, and you can get brass Boxer primed cases for that cartridge.

My understanding is that the step in the chamber is there to comply with a Russian law that says that all weapons in a cartridge used by the military have to have that step to be sold to civilians. Supposedly to make it easier to determine if a weapon used in a crime was stolen from the military or police.

The ones I got from classic did not have the step.  I ordered on from JGSales and then said theirs don't have a step either.

I just purchased one from J&G and it does not have the step.

The steel case stuff could be reloaded, though it really wouldn't be worth the effort dealing with the berdan primers and potential wear on dies.  For the majority of my shooting I use cheap steel case, but it's nice to be able to reload a more accurate round and one with a superior hunting bullet once and a while.

I've heard the same rumors on the chambers, pretty odd practice.  Hope they quit that garbage.

Thanks for your info.
