I just picked up a NIB 16" .223 Friday. It has a rail on the side of the reciever, i want a mount to put a reddot on.Anybody make this? Thx.
I am a AR guy..........know very little about this rifle.
I got a 10 rnd. and a 30 rnd. mag with it.Looked at them at the gunshow today, the 30 rnd. was $40 ?? Is that normal?

If you what to add a red dot sight you have three options. First would be to use a side mount. This is the best option on a budget. I never used to side mount so I can't comment on the quality of different manufactures.  Second would be a topcover rail. I would stay a way from this type as they tend to shift and not hold zero. Third would be to use a scout setup. This is the most expensive type of mount. Ultimak makes a replacement gas tube that has a rail attached. I use Leapers rail system and its rock solid.

$40 bucks for a Saiga mag is normal, the Saiga doesn't have a bullet guide installed under the chamber to feed the round properly, so the mags have them instead. Regular AK mags don't fit or feed normally in a Saiga, though it's relatively easy to fix.

I've never tinkered with the 223 Saiga's and don't know a lot about 223 AK mags either, but I do know on the 7.62x39's you have to file part of the mag catch lever off the Saiga to allow the retainer on the x39 mag to seat properly. I would assume it's the same on the 223 also.

After that install a bullet guide (available at dinzagarms.com/saiga_223/saiga_223.html ) and you'll be able to use hi cap mags. There may be a 922r issue with unconverted Saiga's and hi cap mags, I skipped over that by converting my x39 and making it 922r compliant in the process.

Also you can get a side mount like this at a variety of places:

www.kalinkaoptics.com/detail.aspx?ID=536

Since you have a Saiga, make sure the locking lever is on the bottom and states that it is for an AK mount. SVD/Dragunov receivers have the locking lever on top and are not as tall as an AK receiver, hence a shorter scope or rail mount that will not fit an AK.

And you have another option for the rail, just get a combloc optic like a Kobra, PK-AS
or POSP 4x24 type scope. Prices vary from $150ish to close to $300, but they are good value for the money and not poorly built at all. If you already have an optic it would make more sense to buy a side rail mount, but if not these are great options for any AK type rifle like a Saiga.

Congrats on the rifle btw, Saiga's are a great deal in today's market.
