I can't get the hammer pin back in no matter how hard I try.

The trigger pin is in and fine and the hammer is in place, but as I try to lift the factory retaining spring and puch the pin into place, either the pin won't go through or the factory retaining spring slips and blocks the pin from the final 1/8" or so.

Do I need to pull everything back out and try using actual e-clips or just keep struggling with the factory retaining spring?

Thanks

I had a really hard time on my x39 with the hammer pin too, it would just never seat that last bit. Takes some patience but I think gently spinning the pin will get it to cross that final 1/8".

Zip tie the legs of the hammer spring behind the hammer head.

That take that bit of tension out of the equation.

Insert the pin and line up the hole by holding the hammer.

After you get the end of the pin through the small hole the problem become getting the large end of the pin centered in its hole.

Move the hammer around to center the pin in the hole and it should push right in.

Also, are you reinstalling the BHO parts?  If so, what FCG are you using.  The BHO parts don't work with a Tapco hammer unless you do some mods.  The Tapco hammer would need mods to clear the crosspin also.

Otherwise, I didn't have any problem with mine once the hammer spring is looped around the hammer top and zip tied off to take pressure off the spring.

Winner!

I was going to keep the BHO in place.  What mods do I have to perform in order to do so?

Thanks

I posted a detailed answer and then it got lost it the internet somewhere.

But, a TAPCO hammer is too tight to correctly fit the BHO back in.  You need to file the right side of the hammer where it rest against the BHO device or leave the BHO out.  The section the axis pin goes through.

The .308 receiver also has the crosspin support located back farther due to the longer round and magazine.  Is your hammer modified to clear the cross support?  If not you need to modify the hammer profile to miss the cross support rivet or use a different hammer with a different profile.  Did your trigger hit or bind against the receiver at all?

Trying to use the original Russian hammer with the Tapco trigger and disconnector will result in doubling or even slam fire and is unsafe.  Also could get you sent away like happened in the Olafson case.

Front of hammer ground down to clear cross rivet support

Area of trigger filed down where it may hit receiver cutout.

An RSA VEPR .308 FCG would work without the hammer being reprofiled but I don't know about the installation of the BHO.

I am reviving this old thread to say thanks to those who posted answers to my questions and helped me finish the conversion of my Saiga.

Here's a picture of her now:

I finally got her to the range yesterday for some test firing and she ran flawlessly.  The trigger was very nice and crisp, but prolly around 6 pounds or less.  Almost as good as my AR.  I have to find/purchase another front sight tool as I am left and high at 100yards, but otherwise I am really impressed.  I am planning on adding a few surfire 20 round mags (are the 25s okay?) and a KOBRA when finances allow.

I want to finish her off with a muzzle device and better iron sighting options.

Questions:

1. Where can I find/buy the sights that come from the HK line of rifles like the G3, etc. (replacement dust cover with drum sight and matching front sight)

2. What is legal as far as taming the 16" beasty on the muzzle end?

3. Will the Kobra work with the drum sight or will it get in the way of each other?

Thanks,
Spoon
