Just picked up a NIB 7.62x39 Saiga today price was 300.00 out the door. The only bad thing was it only had one 10 shot mag. I found some 30rd ones online but 40 bucks for a mag is high anyone know where some cheaper ones are or have some for sale? Also I have not got to shoot it yet what is the accuracy on one of these? Better then a standard ak or the same? thanks

From what everyone is saying at saiga12forum the thermold 30 round mags will work by just filing a bit off the bottom of the rear locking lug or file the mag latch a small amount.  CDNNinvestments and Centerfire Systems had these in stock for under $13.00 each.  Either that or do the conversion and install a bullet guide.  I bought some and did the mod in about a minute and using dummy rounds it fed them.  They should last as long as the regular saiga mags.

I think you should start by getting (1) original mag, and load up on the cheaper aftermarkets.

Yes, buy filing the mag catch so they will lock in and installing a bullet guide so they will feed correctly.  Aim Surplus was selling them with no bullet guide in their conversion.  They said they didn't need them.  At least one person posted here they would not feed the rounds and they had to buy a bullet guide from dinzagarms.com.

To use AK magazines you need a bullet guide (or feed ramp) but the ones made by Thermold will work.  To use hi capacity magazines you have to add US compliant parts.  Most Saiga owners will convert their rifles to the original pistol grip configuration where they add a US made pistol grip, butt stock and FCG.  They also file down the magazine catch and add a feed ramp so they can use AK mags.  I used the Dremel to cut the feed ramp to allow the use of both AK and Saiga magazines in my conversion because Thermold magazines were not available at the time.

DPH Arms sell a magazine which they claim operated the bolt hold open after the last shot for the Saiga.  I'm waiting for feedback from users before I buy one of them.
The Yugo magazines will hold the bolt open after the last shot but the bolt will close when the magazine is removed.

+1 get a bullet guide.

And if you file the mag catch just right AK mags will lock up solid and factory mags will still work fine but with a little play.

It is a common misconception that you must add US parts to use highcap mags.  If you leave the rest of the rifle stock, not adding pistol grips or other "eveil" features of the 89 ban, then you are fine to use highcaps.  Remember the Mak 90.
