I have been wondering about Saigas in .223 as I have recently become interested in a .223 AK variant.

I realize these are Russian AK's, but is the quality high enough to justify the effort it takes to convert them? I have seen many that use Surefire or Galil magazines, but can they use standard 5.56 AK magazines, such as those availible from K-var? After the conversion, installation of the bullet guide are these guns typical AK reliable? I am sure it depends on the workmanship, but I am looking for a "general" answer.

How would a converted Saiga compare to a SLR106? Are the converts that much better than other 5.56x45 AK's? By the way, when I say converted Saiga, I am not referring to Tromix but user-modified weapons.

I appreciate the help.

The saiga is a good gun for the money. On the three I have had fit and finish was very good. All have functioned without any problems.Mine is the 223 cal and is in the stock form.As you said alot depends on the workmanship of the conversion. The 223 mags are not quite as "standard size"as is the 7.62x39 or 5.45x39 ak mags .Also the 223 does not have the tapered case like 7.62 or 5.45 does to aid it in feeding into the chamber. This is where the bullet guide installation is key.If you do this right and use some good quality mags it should run good.Compared to the slr it is about half the price, but imo more than half the gun.

I have a converted saiga, and its actually become my favorite AK, I have a Mak-90, a norinco type 56, milled arsenal SLR 95 and have owned many others. For some reason the Saiga is my favorite. I bought it thinking it was gonna be a project to mess with and that would be it. Its a great rifle. Maybe I just got lucky but I dont think so.

With a Dinzag feed ramp mine is 100% even on the low-exiting Galil polys and sleazy Wolf hp, steady 2moa too.
