Just snagged a VEPR K in 5.56mm via the EE.

WOW!

A few quick questions:

1) Where can I get 30-round magazines with SLAB SIDES (not waffle pattern) for this rifle?

2) Is it possible to install a Krebs gas block/front sight combo on this rifle, and if so, which one?

3) Are any rail systems sold for this rifle?

4) Does ANYONE make an AR-style rear sight similar to what Krebs used to put on the KTR-03V?

5) What muzzle attachments are available for this weapon, and what thread specs do I need to stick to?

6) Can a Saiga front grip be attached to this thing?

Thanks!

Dig around gunbroker for Polish Beryl mags at about $40 each. But mine also uses converted bakes and Bulgy waffles (after waff got a few light file strokes straight back under the front mag catch to allow lock in)

I like the oem stock handling, using a Harris bipod and plinking with a PO3.5x 'wide view' scope.

Sending this BTT with another question:

What muzzle devices are available for installation on a 5.56 barrel that has no threads? What is available WITH threads, and what size thread cutter would I need?

Thanks.

My experience with VEPR has shown there are almost no after market parts and few parts from other AK variants fit them.  I would also be interested to know who does barrel threading for VEPRs because mine is post-ban.

I have an old 7.62x39 that is really great.  Somewhere between me and the factory an attachment with a rail was added.  It looks like pieces had to be removed to get the rail on.

Your VEPR used to have a rail like this on it:

I thought it was kind of odd and aesthetically leaves a lot to be desired.  OTOH, the rifle is very accurate and shoots like a dream.  It's the best AK I've ever had.

Not sure what the story is behind the rail.  It's not like any other I have ever seen.

What kind of rail is that?

RMP-3

Okay, that's the rail used for the traditional AK style scope mount.

timr, I'm sure you could remove your rail and put an RMP-3 on your VEPR.

It appears that the two lower screws on your rail are attached via the hammer pin and trigger pin holes on your receiver. I'm sure you could replace the hammer pin and trigger pin after installing the original style rail.

The RMP-3 is marginally different from the original VEPR rail, so you would likely have a tiny bit of mismatch between the RMP-3 and your receiver's finish. It also has an additional mounting hole in the center of it.

And, yes, it's the traditional style AK rail.

And I would contact tantal to be certain that it will fit your receiver. That's just the one that I have been able to find that seems to match the original the closest.

I have no plans to replace the rail.  Thanks for the info.

I'm curious....

Is the factory rail a good way to mount an optic? I've heard horror stories of optics on AK's, but mostly those mounted on the dust cover.

I'm very happy with the side mount.

I have a quality red dot mounted and it returns to zero everytime I remove and remount it.

That depends on the optic you want to mount. If you are looking to mount a red dot, the side rail sucks balls. The Ultimak is a much better way to mount an Aimpoint.

EOThingies on AK's don't work out so good...especially if you try to mount them on the gas tube. Theoretically I suppose you could mount one on a side rail that allows for it, but that will be some nasty offset to deal with.

If you are looking for a more traditional style scope with magnification, however, the side rail type mounts are pretty much your only option.

Ultimak makes a rail for the gas tube area and ACE makes some nice stocks for it. As far as the muzzle breaks and stuff there is only one I know of and that was the set screw one from Robinson. I have the 20" Vepr 2 in 7.62x39 also and it is a fantastic AK.
