I went into a local gunshop not too long ago to purchase my first weapon. I went in to get a shotgun or a bolt action rifle. Saw this puppy sitting there and got it instead. A new in box (circa 1990) Romanian AK-47. I've always loved AK's but never thought I'd own one of my own. The price was hard to beat. $360 for the gun, 2 30rd mags, a bayonet, and a sling. http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e111/smokinAMD/MISC/DSCF2002.jpg |

Good looking AK you have there! If you're wanting to "fix it up"...you can polish the charging handle and bolt carrier real easy with a wire brush wheel and a drill. Also, the tung oil idea is good...however, I'd stay off the Minwax. I did my first AK with Minwax....and everything after that with either Tru-Oil (which I'm not a big fan of either) or alcohol based Chestnut Ridge stain. That is REAL good stuff and very adjustable. Have fun with it...when you're not tear-arseing around the road course!! |
| I took it to the range the first time yesterday, seems fairly accurate at 75 yards. I was pleasently surprised I hit what I was shooting at after driving to chicago and back in the same day the previous day for ZoomZoomLive and being dead tired. Abusing brand new cars and not getting in trouble for it = fun! Sadly I want a new car now, d'oh! |
| Thats my plan, I want to get some more mags for it, I've found a good place to get ammo cheap locally, but mags I can't seem to find at all. I cant really afford to do too much crazy stuff at the moment, as I've dumped about $7k in upgrades into my car this year. |

www.centerfiresystems.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=114 Thinking about ordering that. Seems to be a pretty good deal from what I've seen so far. I'd like to get a scope for it, but have no clue what to get. I'm pretty much at a loss at what to purchase for this, and what upgrades I should do. Hell, ask me what swaybars and springs to run on a car, and I can tell you without a problem. |
Upgrades are really up to you, personally i like them about stock. the wsar is a cheaper ak. its definately a beater. if you fall in love with it you'll get another. i did. i would hold off on any really great optics til another rifle, but thats just my .02. you dont really "need" any upgrades on the gun, it'll run. some people dont like the way the pistol grip feels some dont like the shorter stock and want a full length nato stock. others dont want wood. its about preference, not need. and you should be able to find cheaper magazines than that if you are interested. those are yugo mags, and thats neat, but there are ways to make standard mags hold your bolt open on the last shot(atleast until the mag is removed). sportsman's guide has hungarian 20 rnd magazines for 2.50 each right now. you might be interested in them, they make it so there is really no mag wobble in the gun. plus, they look swell. here is a link to look at. i did a quick search and i couldn't find the 20 rnd thing, but i just ordered some a week ago so i'm sure its there. http://www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=282484 they have a 6/12 pack for a decent price if you aren't caring if the mags are yugo or not. oh, and avoid US made magazines. i would suggest looking into refinishing the wsar wood. when it comes stock it looks sort of crappy, but the wood refinishes great with some tung oil and rit dyes mixed to a color. just strip off the stuff on the stocks now, sand em down a bit and get em how you like it- then bang. beautiful stocks. |

$7.99 used Soviet Bloc mags. CDNN I have bought a few of these from CDNN and been very satisfied. You can get 6 of them for $48. Then you can buy that East German mag pouch somewhere else for cheap. Heck, that same place you linked for us, Centerfire, sells the East German pouch for $1.99. So for the same money you get 2 extra magazines! |
