I bought a WASR GP-10 (with forward laminate pistol grip) about 2 months ago, and at the time I didn't know what the difference was with them and other AK's.  Mine came with a threaded muzzle compensator, but of course no mag dimples on the receiver.  And then I read some problems some WASR owners had with their guns.

Today I took it out and put 80 rds through it (that's all I had....) and it worked perfectly, and shot accurately.  I was very pleased with the way it worked.  And having the forward pistol grip is a big bonus.  I had a couple of Norinco's about 10 years ago, and I remember how the handguards would get so damn hot that I couldn't hold the gun (not saying anything bad about the Norinco's, that happens with every AK).  With the pistol grip I barely felt the heat...plus it made me feel like a real bad ass doing 3 round drills...

I guess I can't speak for all WASR's, but I know mine worked great, and I don't regret getting it.  I'm going to call Centerfire Systems on Tuesday and ask about the WASR AK-74's they have for $329.  If they have a thread muzzle comp, I'm going to buy one and put the 74 muzzle break on it and get a new set of handguards with the pistol grip.

One thing I forgot to mention, is that I'm going to switch out from my AR-15 to my WASR as my SHTF weapon once the ammo issue is worked out a bit.  The M1943 round has a nice tendancy to penetrate into cars and other objects, making it an ideal man-stopper.

NEWB question! What is an SHTF weapon? I assume some sort of self defense acronym?

SHTF = shit hit the fan

This might seem really lame-ass, but line the insides of your AK handguards with aluminum foil. It WORKS!

Awesome, thanks bud. I guess my SHTF weapon is my WASR too.

did your AK come with that lower hand guard or did you install it? Looks Polish to me.

That's one of the newer SAR/WASR handguards. They have been laminate like that since '03, IIRC.

If you're asking me, which I assume you are, I bought those handguards and stock from a person on gunsnet I think...it might have been on the equipment exchange here, I can't remember..anyways my rifle came with the crappy Tapco side-folder and flat sided lower handguards....I think these look much better, also I bought the upper handguard at a local gunshow, it's laminated, so it's impossible to crack it.(which I did to the old one!) Cheers!

I never thought of that, but yes that should work. Silver is the most reflective color, so that foil should reflect a lot of heat.

Yup, just put the shiny side towards the barrel.  It reflects the best.

(I mention this because many kinds of foil have a more shiny side.)
