At least, I assume it's the mag well. I've got a WASR-10, runs beautifully, but every now and then when I insert a magazine, it goes in crooked. And you won't know it's crooked until you try to chamber a round. The charging handle stops halfway back and gets stuck. If you try removing the magazine, you have to REALLY yank it out of there and the partially extracted round pops out as the magazine comes free.

How do I keep it from doing that? It's happened two or three times now.

Is it crooked side-to-side or is the top not going deep enough into the magazine well as it should be? If it isn't going in all the way, that would keep it from loading a fresh round.

I think the front is going too far into the mag well. I'd have to look at it when it gets jammed again to be sure.

You may have one of those WASR-10's that gives most of the others a bad name.

Although mine and many others have no problems with the mag wells on our WASR-10's there have been those that claimed this problem would one day haunt us all if we bought the WASR-10.  In your case it may mean that you just have to pay a little more attention to loading your rifle than someone else.

The first thing I'd do is take off the top cover, then take an empty magazine and insert and remove it until the problem happens. When it happens, see what exactly is causing it. Try to determine if it's always the same magazine, or if it happens with all your magazines. You may also want to check for burrs around the magazine well just for good measure.

Good idea; I'll do that.

I'm not sure, but I think it only does it with the one magazine. I didn't see any different the two mags when I inspected them though; no bent lips, burrs, etc.

Most likely you need to clean your mag well up a bit.

It could be a problem or could just be the way you are inserting them.  Seems when i let someone play with my AK (unloaded of course) the first thing they do it put the mag in wrong (front too deep) and get it stuck.

It's happened with all of my Ak's dating back to the mid 80s.

Now, that said, if your mag is getting crooked side to side, then it's a different problem.  Could be that one of the magazine guides is cut down too much from when it was opened up for hicap mags.  This would also do what you are describing.
