I refinished the wood and used Perma Blue on my WASR...
Polished the handle and got a Russian sling

What kind of perma blue? The kind you can get in any gunshop?

How did you strip off the nasty WASR paint?

Looks good. Makes me want to blue my WASR instead of the paint...I think I will.

I used Perma Blue which I got from WalMart.
To get the nasty WASR paint off I used Perma Blue Rust remover, then I polished it with Dremel from Walmart too and finished with fine steel wool and after that with regular Perma Blue.
This is probably not the best protective coating but I am not using my AK in the rain ...it always stays in warm placehttp://img511.imageshack.us/img511/12/cimg32534nb.jpg

I did the same exact thing to mine this weekend.  I used a mahogany stain on the stock, looks just like yours.
