I have a Romak II  5.45 X 39 caliber rifle. The barrel has a nut welded to the end of the barrel. What kind of tools and parts do I need to put AK-74 muzzle break on it ? Thanks.....Mike

It all depends on what is under the nut.  You can cut off the muzzle nut to see what is below it.  If it is threaded, then you can install a retaining pin in the FSB and then screw on the brake or FS of your choice.  If however, it is not threaded, you have 2 choices.

1.  Remove the FSB and install a threaded Romy FSB with 22 mm threads.  You can get them from

KVAR

Or

2.  Once the nut is off, measure the diameter of the barrel.  You are looking for 14 mm or 0.551 inches.  If it is close to that, then you can get a die and guide to thread the barrel to 14 mm x 1 LH threads (easy as pie to do).  Remove the front pin in the FSB and and install a plunger pin and spring, then re-install the front pin.

or

3. If it is smaller than 14 mm or close to 1/2 inch, you can thread to 1/2 x 28 RH thread and install almost any FS made for mouse guns (aka AR15s).  Or install a 1/2 x 28 to 14 mm x 1 LH thread adaptor and then install the brake of your choice.  You would still need to install the plunger pin and spring in the FSB.

My FSB already has the plunger pin and spring installed. Where do I get the threading die from ??? is it hard to do ???

Threading is easy.  However, you still need to know what is under the muzzle nut.  If you are very lucky, the barrel will already be threaded, but I would not hold my breath.

You will need to determine your barrel diameter first.  Once you do, you can contact these guys dayna systems for help with the die and the guide.

Most likely, you will need to go with a 14 mm x 1 LH thread, but the guide needs to fit into the 5.45 barrel.

There is nothing under the muzzle nut on your rifle and the barrel is turned down to .508". All the Romanian 5.45x39mm rifles are AK-74 rifles except for one part. The front sight base which is a AKM front sight base. Once the muzzle nut is removed you can threads the barrel 1/2-28 which is the standard size threads for AR-15/M-16 rifles. Then any muzzle brake/flash supressor for a AR-15/M-16 can be used. There is a AK-74 style brake made that has 1/2-28 threads.

The best tool to cut the tack welds is a Dremel tool with a Dremel # 409 cutoff wheel.  The fiber reinforced cutoff wheels may seem like the real deal but trust me on this one they are too large in diameter and thick. The tack welds are not but about 1/16" deep. After the welds are cut pliers or a pipe wrench will be needed to twist the muzzle nut off. A little file work on the tack welds on the front sight then some cold blue will make it look like they were never there.

Threading the barrel is really easy you will need a die,die stock(handle),cutting oil,and a Thread Alignment Tool. To save a few bucks you can order a 1/2-28 die,die stock, cutting oil from
www.victornet.com/cgi-bin/victor/index.html
#RD-1/2-28-C = die = $13.20
#DS-1-1/2 = die stock = $7
#CF-TE-PT =cutting oil = $6.30
Then a 1/2-28 TAT from Dynasystems which will be slightly too large to fit into the 5.45x39mm barrel. But twisting it with you hand while holding some fine sandpaper between your finger will remove the couple of 1000ths of a inch from the shank of the TAT so it will fit in the 5.45 barrel.
Two sheets of paper towels twisted into a cone shape then taped to the barrel will catch all the oil and metal chips from threading the barrel.

Threading instructions are on the Dyansystems website.

Another thing that I like to do is to put in a cleaning patch inside the barrel about an inch past the end of the muzzle.  So, when you are done, pust the patch forward out the front end of the barrel and any oil or metal bits get pushed out.

Same thing on a SAR-1 if I wanted to add a slant brake?  Same die?

You need the 14mm x 1 LH die and the 7.62 to 14mm tread alignment tool. for the SAR 1.
