On the dark side. What are the best mags for my newly acquired SAR3, and what are the identifying marks? Yeah, I know it's a dumbass newbie question. Flog away! |
|
There are tree types of mags. The first type sre converted E.G. or Russian bakelite mags that have been modified. They are ok, but that about it. The second type are the Bulgarian .223 mags. They are supposedly pretty good, but still not totally reliable. The last type is the German Weiger mag. They are widely considered the only way to go for reliability. Cost is about $20 each. Expensive as hell for us AK guys, but cheap to an AR guy! |
3 minutes with a fine tooth bastard file and they can be 100%. You just have to remove a small amount of plastic in the right areas to lower the feed angle(this is controled by the mag shoulder). The mod is super easy if you understand what you are doing. |

So how do I tell a Weiger from a Bulgarian mag? I'm looking at a (I hope it's a Weiger) mag. It has 2 tits on the floorplate, to compress the spring to disassemble the mag, a ridge up the back that has spot welds every quarter inch or so, and a mag catch on the upper front of it that looks like it has been milled on the sides. I can plainly see the milling marks in the mag catch, even though they have been blued. The mag looks new, and very well made. Thanks. Tim As far as the "bastard file" goes, please see my feedback..... |

the 5.56x45 east german weiger magazine is very similar to the old ak-47 (7.62x39) magazine. the weiger is manufactured from steel, as opposed too the polymer bulgarian 5.56 magazines. the weiger has less curvature to the magazine bidy, again due to the cartridge geometry of the 5.56 round. it is also slightly thinner and longer (front to rear) than the old 7.62 magazine. bulgarian 5.56 mags are injection molded from glass reinforced polymer. they are in the 7.62x39 "waffle" (grid) pattern and feature overshot (molded into the plastic) steel latch points and feed lips. these are identifiable by the curvature, waffle pattern and the code 10 or code 21 molded into the bottom side of the magazine body. |

The steel with the two buttons on the bottom for takedown are wieger. As is likely the 10 rounder that came with the rifle. They are totally reliable. I also note that with use the converted bakelites worked fine for me as well, they just took a while to get broken in. |
