Need the down and dirty from the experts on this rifle. I'm thinking about investing in the 7.62x54R caliber and want something practical, reliable, and accurate. Let me know. Krinkfreak |

I've had one for a while and like it quite a bit. Accuracy varies with different types of ammo. Mine likes the Czech silvertip stuff, and the Russian stuff shot groups about twice the size. Try to get one with the higher power scope already on it. Mine came with a 4X hunting scope and I'm going to have to break down and get an 8x (6x at least) military to get the most out of the gun. I have a Red Star Arms FCG in mine. If you do anything, PUT ONE OF THESE THINGS IN! Standard single hook FCG. While we all know the RSA makes things nice in an AK, it really changes things in the Romak-3. I'm no longer fighting the trigger, just the ammo and scope issues now. I've had no problems with corrosive ammo, but I have shot alot of corrosive in the past and know how to deal with it. Mine looks no different than if I shot non-corrosive out of it. 7.62x54R is one bad-ass cartridge! It will rip your arm off in a M44 Carbine, but shooting the Romak-3 is like firing an M14 or FAL. The gas system, weight, muzzle brake and spring-loaded buttplate help out quite a bit. The rifle locks open on the last round, which is COOL! It uses an RPK reciever, and has reinforceing plates rivetted on the rear. It's more than a match for the stronger cartirdge. The thumbhole stock is kinda wierd, but once you're used to it, it's OK. I've been kicking around the idea of putting my CHOATE thumbhole on it, but I'm going to get a better scope first. It has AK types sights (calibrated for the 7.62x54R) that work well because of the very long sight radius. It has AK reliablility. Not much more needed to say there. It's far less expensive than a real Dragunov, but it's not a Dragunov and don't expect Dragunov accuracy out of it. Think of it more like a huge AK that shoots really big, heavy, fast bullets. I'd say it's capable of 600 meter shots on man-sized targets easy enough but you'd be pushing it to go much farther. Get the rifle with an 8x, do the trigger with an RSA, and you should be set. Ammo is probably going to be your limiting factor as far as accuracy goes. I've been kicking around the idea of handloading, but it's cheaper and more fun to "search for the right load" by shooting tons of cheap surplus stuff. One day I'll get serious with it and do it. I think most people don't understand the actual niche the Romak-3 fits. Most don't like the idea of it's high cost, or lack of hi-caps. The fact that most other "sniper" rifles are far more accurate doesn't help either. I look at it as just a BFAK that has longer range. Ross |

Enjoyed Ross' gun at Bfest! If you need big glass/long shots it's fine. And it is a great power cartridge with lots of bargain milsurp around. But for 100-200 yds I have been using a M39 with a pistol scope on the rear sight leaf area with under $300 invested. No practical way to get over 4x glass though. |

Excellent review on the Romak. I've decided to go ahead and purchase one. I spoke with Troy Sellars of InRange and he has a few in-stock with scope. I'm going to have him install the RSA FCG. Can't wait for the warm weather to arrive to take it to the range!!!! Thanks again! KF |
Nope, the Drag mag won't work. You can modify a Romainian mag to work in a Drag but it's a MAJOR overhaul!! K-var had them once, but they are out. Supposedly they may get more, but who knows? If you find anyone who has them post it back here please. I need to get some myself. Ross |
