| Hi guys, I have ordered a Romanian AKM in 7.62 (with Soviet AKM furniture and slant muzzle brake fitted) and was wondering how I tell exactly what model it is?.I am in the UK and it is brand new from the Romanian factory with 30r mags from the word go.I have looked on the net but there is a lot of info to take in, so what is the easiest way to tell?.Will post some pics when I pick it up.I am pretty sure it has mag well dimples and the stamps in the receiver where the 3rd axis pin would be and obviously the muzzle is threaded.Any advice is appreciated :) |

Hmmmm.......145 views and no response :( 1) AKs are now legal in the U.K.?? Sounds like a deactivated AKM. 2) AKs have been banned from import into the U.S. since 1989. All of our "ak"s are made in the USA - at least a majority of the parts are made here. 3) Since we only get U.S.-made guns, our model designations are essentially meaningless for your purposes. Could you post a link to WHERE you bougt this gun? It might help. |

Defineatly not deactivated!
AK's are legal in the UK as long as they are converted to single shot (gas system disabled), and they can be imported complete (I have an Izhmash Saiga MK-03/ AK-104) The Romanian AKM is from a UK based company called Rusmilitary.....check out their website, they are now bringing in Romanian underfolders and SVD/Dragunovs as well as the 10* range |

I actually bought 2 of the now ultra rare 10 round preban mags for the Saiga 20 guage shotgun from Rusmilitary. This was back when they sent them over complete! (later sent them in 2 packages out of paranoia. Sold them years ago. Good to hear you guys can get those rifles - even if not semi or even fully automatic. We can't even get the gun you own - we have to remanufacture them here. Please let us know how it shoots. The lack of a gas system will probably improve the accuracy a little. |

Well, the accuracy is definitely affected by the lack of the gasses moving the action. Probably why it's more accurate. It's too bad you guys can't own semi-autos. GB has silly laws. |

A single shot AK? Well I guess it is fun to look at and dream about what it could do. Why not just get a bolt action single shot Because at the end of the day an AK is an Ak...right?...... Plus the fact that in the UK we can have an AK that is 100% Russian,Romanian or whatever and no mag restrictions, plus its surprising how quick you can operate the bolt with practice.Think of the old British Lee Enfields, iirc the record is 38 AIMED shots in one minute and thats bolt action, not straight pull :) |

How do they de-activate the gas system? Weld over the gas port? They stick a plug in the gas block and put a 3" piece of steel in place of a gas piston. I'm sure we could fix that for you when "The Day" comes. This probably won't help you but here's some good info on US semi-auto Romanian AK's + handling and fixing issues with them: http://www.novarata.net/Linx310/fsbcantfix.shtml Good read for all AK owners. Got any pictures of your Romanian? I'd like to see it as I have a little bit of Romanian AK collection. |

So in the UK; do you have to have that sent to a gun dealer to do paperwork? Or does it come straight to your house? Does it have to be registered? I thought even .22s had to be kept at a licensed gun range or something. it gets delivered to a Registered Firearms Dealer (RFD) and gets transferred onto my Firearms Certificate (providing i have the relevant 'slot' for the calibre on my certificate, which i have). If i didnt have a slot for it i can apply to the firearms Licensing department for what is known as a variation, whereby i can either substitute on e calibre for another or create another slot on the certificate to accomodate the new calibre.Once it is on my certificate i can then keep it at home in an approved gun cabinet which is all checked out by a Firearms Liason Officer before a certificate is granted......hope that makes sense :) |

Make sure that when you remove the plug in the barrel, you use a reamer (not a drill bit!) to finish and make sure not to go too deep or you will hit the other side. Next, then installing the new piston, there NEEDS to be a slight "wobble" or the gun won't function correctly. There are instructions on replacing the gas piston in the "build" section of this forum. |

The plug is in the mouth of the gas block, not in the port in the barrel, but its all academic as re-instating the gas system here in the uk would be highly illegal as semi autos are not allowed over .22lr. |

You are stuck with that it seems. Still good info to keep tucked away for a rainy day. |
