I have been looking for a way to lock the bolt back on my 74. I have come across a lot of good info on the net about "tricks" like riding the bolt forward until it rests on the hammer, Pulling the trigger before riding the bolt forward, etc. The issue i have is that these all pertain to the AK-47. Since the bolt face is smaller on the 74 I can only assume that the extra material that would have caught up on the hammer is absent form an AK-74 bolt face. I have heard of products like the BJB SWIFT, and the Krebs MK V. I've even been told numerous times to cut a notch in my safety. These though are not exactly what I'm looking for. I want to be able to have the bolt lock back on the last round, Stay locked back and then a quick pull on the charging handle will disconnect the bolt catch and get the weapon back into service. If you can rest the bolt face on the back of a 47 hammer and do this then it's not redesigning the wheel in order to fabricate a part that performs a similar function safely and without potential damage to the weapon..
With all the aftermarket parts made for the AK there has to be a drop in, internal bolt catch somewhere. I have exhausted my searches but have only found modified safety selectors. If not it's a product that has applications! Anyone know of an internal, drop in bolt catch? Thanks! |

I have come across a lot of good info on the net about "tricks" like riding the bolt forward until it rests on the hammer, Pulling the trigger before riding the bolt forward, etc. That's not "good info". The hammer will not reliably hold the bolt carrier to the rear. The issue i have is that these all pertain to the AK-47. Since the bolt face is smaller on the 74 I can only assume that the extra material that would have caught up on the hammer is absent form an AK-74 bolt face. The hammer doesn't "engage" the bolt face because the bolt face does not move beyond the hammer. The hammer rubs against the bottom of the carrier. The friction will sometimes hold the carrier to the rear. I have heard of products like the BJB SWIFT, and the Krebs MK V. I've even been told numerous times to cut a notch in my safety. These though are not exactly what I'm looking for. The Yugoslavians designed a last shot BHO when they began producing their milled version of the AK. The magazine for that rifle had a small "window" cut in the side. Those rifles will not accept a standard AK magazine, unless the BHO mechanism is removed. They dispensed with that feature and redesigned the follower to hold the bolt open (at least until the magazine is removed). I have a vague recollection of reading about a similar mechanism for stamped receiver AKs, which was designed by someone in the US. I cannot remember if modifications to the receiver and magazines were necessary. The device may never have been produced. |
| Thanks for the info. My 74 is new and I could not get the bolt carrier to rest on the hammer like everyone assured me it would(apparently after breaking in the tolerances will have loosened to the point that this will no longer happen). I have been military(AF) for 20+ years and am used to the M-16 family platform. To me, the BHO feature and its functionality is second nature and I always wondered, with the popularity of AK aftermarket parts and modifications, why this modification has never been fully explored for the AK platform. If anyone else knows which stamped receiver mod you're talking about, at least we have a start! |

Do not try to run it like one. You should have done your research and shot the platform before you bought one. Like I said, not trying to be a dick but many AR guys get an AK thinking they are going to run it like one and end up bad mouthing the platform because it's different. By reading you first post you're on that path unless you are willing to change your way of thinking. |
