Used Brownells AlumaHydeII semi gloss black.  Gave it a couple of days to dry and then baked it at 350* for 25mins this morning to make sure it hardened.

Turned out fairly nice.  I have a UTG railed front guard, but have a bulgy lower on the way.  I haven't figured out which setup I will finally go with.

What type of prep work does it require before applying?  Is that product durable?

Nice job man, a major improvement for sure.  I've had great results with Alumahyde II myself.  So far it has proven itself to be very durable and solvent resistant.

I degreased it with Mineral spirits, Q-tips, and toothpicks.  Then hit it lightly with steel wool.  Then alcohol rub down a little before the paint.

The afternoons have been warm, so the Ak was warm when it was rubbed down for paint.  Put the AlumaHydeII in a gallon sized freezer bag and let it sit in HOT water in the sink.

It sprays pretty thick, but reduces down when it starts drying.  I bake the AlumaHydeII when I use it.  I could probably get away with not baking it, but just to be sure....  I've down a few sets of mags in their Dark Park Grey color and the finish is VERY durable and doesn't add too much thickness.  The mags will still fall free after refinishing.

The butt pad was picked up awhile back, but I can't remember where for sure.  I found this one with a quick search:

Looks good, without seeing how it will look in its other set ups I like the wood and would keep it that way, its unique

Pretty sure I told you in the pic thread I love your AK.

I just like the rugged look it has with the wood lower / perforated upper and wire folder.
It's pretty much all utility.  It's the kind of setup that would look just as good if you dropped it a hundred times on gravel, or let it slide around in the bed of your truck with no liner.

That butt pad is available from Kalinka optics for $30 or so, sold for an SVD.  But it's built to fit almost every kind of AK stock.  Solid, side folding, and even underfolding.
It's available for about $8-10 from UTG / Leapers as a knockoff, but doesn't come with the strap.  I'm pretty sure anyone could come up with that no problem.

I would REALLY like to see a Romy wood VFG style lower front guard on that rifle.  (I have the K-VAR all black poly Bulgy furniture on my Romanian AK.)  And it's a clean look.
But that one bit of wood with all the rest sets it off to me.

I saw that metal gas tube cover about a year or two ago.  Always wondered how it would look, and thought about getting one.
Now I pretty much have to get one.  I like it.

Thanks.  I did have the VFG style on that same rifle awhile back, but sold it off.  I had to reprofile it to make it work with the 30rd circle10 mags and the 40rds.

Sorry to resurrect an older thread, but can someone tell me where I can get a perforated metal upper handguard such as what's in the OP?
