Regretibly my good ol' .308 deer rifle was stolen and I havent had the opportunity to replace it yet. So I was wondering how many people out there use the PSL to hunt with? I know certian states have magazine restrictions etc... I'm going to modify a magazine to conform to this. But I was wondering who uses it on deer? What kind of ammo? What kind of optics do you use? Thanks. It's either this or a K31 or 1917 is .303.... I'll be hunting in GA not IN if that helps. Thanks again.

I wouldn't see why you couldn't hunt with a PSL. They only problem I could foresee is finding the appropriate ammo to use. Most of the 54r ammo is manufactured in FMJ. Most of the soft points I have seen have the heavier bullets (203 gr). Little to heavy to be shooting out of a PSL, but if you install an AK buffer in your rifle you should be able to shoot the rounds without damaging your rifle. Then again you could just always just use standard ammo to hunt with, the deer wont know the difference.

Thats what I was thinking I think I have soem 184gr softpoints around here that I've shot through it without anything too bad happening so far...I'm going to have to stock up on the lightball.... I should probably change out the optic though or just go iron sights

You can get Prvi Partisan brass cased boxer primed PSP 150 grain from either Midway USA or Graf & Sons if they have any in stock. Worth looking at. I have fired several boxes in my PSL just to get the brass for reloading. Groups ran about two inches at 100 with out any hassels. Should work great for deer. You can modify a mag to five rounds by just putting a pop rivet in the visual check hole and undo it by drilling out the rivet when you are done. I would not change a thing on mine to go hunting with it really. I have read several accounts by other guys who have done it with good results.

FWIW I took a buck last year with my K31. Aside from being a heavy rifle it's a friggen tack driver.

Yeah mine is too, but I'm hunting in hog country and stalking not standing... so I'd like something semi-auto just for safety's sake :)

I use an AK where most people use a 30-30.

PSL should be great unless your moving through dense foliage.

Sorry to hear about your .308 being stolen and I hope you get it back somehow.
I think the PSL would make a fine deer rifle even though it's a bit long but if it's open country that doesn't matter so much. As for ammo do you hand load? I use IMR-3031 powder and Hornady 150 grain soft points in mine and accuracy is outstanding.

Unfortunitely it'd cost me more to try and get it back than it would to just replace the dang thing, it was a nice savage model 10 pre-accutrigger, not sure what it had in it but it was nice. Very Very Nice, bushnell elite 3200, harris bipod, tapered bull barrel... But unfortunitely I don't have the ability to hand load but I can probably get my friend to hand load some up if I get the components and the dies.... What kind of accuracy do you get out of the handloads you use and can you pm me the load specs? Thanks a lot guys you all have been incredibly helpful.

Here are some pics of targets with one of the better hand loads I have tried so far. The loads were done with Hornady 150 grain .312 PSP bullets made for the 303 British. I have heard that some PSL rifles will shoot regular .308 bullets as well. If you are interested PM me and I will send along the loading die, expander ball and loading tips on making up the loads I have tried so far. The second pic is a target fired using the Prvi factory loads, as you can see it would be plenty good for deer hunting with out the need for hand loading.

It worked well for my son this fall....  First shot was back a bit, as he was moving at 265yrds.    The kill shot was taken from 210yrds as he was down with his head up.

You may get some really nasty looks from the very same people who will want to try your rifle at the range.

The same nasty looks that the guys with AR's get when they go hunting for anything larger than prairie dogs.  I never thought I would find  a comparison between a PSL and an AR.

I had a fellow hunter and co-worker tell me the PSL was way to hi-tech for hunting, after seeing the above picture.    I thought  it was perfect for a new hunter like my son.   He isn't much of a shooter, doesn't like recoil, and didn't really want to go hunting.   I told him he had to one time.    He had never previously shot the PSL, only dry fired it a few times to get a feel of the trigger.

It worked really, really well for him.  His first shot was at 265yrds, on a moving target.    His kill shot went through both shoulders , and can be seen in the picture.    He was very proud, and I was one proud dad.    How can that be wrong?    My friends hunting rig with optics probably cost close to 1200, yet the PSL, only cost me $850.
