am I doing any damage to my WASR10 by dry firing?

Some people will say "Yes".
Some people will say "No".
My suggestion: Snap Caps. That way you don't have to figure out who is right.

+1 Snap caps are always a good idea for testing actions. They're cheap.

I would not suggest dry firing by removing the bolt, the hammer will batter the center support, possibly damaging either or both.

How do snap caps work?  The only time I'm dry firing is during reassembly after cleaning

No need to dry fire at that time. With no magazine in the rifle pull the operating handle back a bit until the carrier contacts the hammer, squeeze the trigger and ease the handle forward.
The hammer will be down and the chamber is empty.
Put the top cover on.

A Snap-Cap is just a type of dummy round (sometimes an action-proving round) that has a small  slug of a polymer compound in the primer pocket (A-Zoom, etc.), or with some (Pachmyer, for example), a small brass cup in the pocket with a spring inside the cartridge body.  The idea is simply to give the firing pin something resilient to hit, eliminating any possible shock damage to the pin.
