Way back in the long-ago, I recall reading about the then new AK-74s having a boltcarrier cocking handle that was angled up about 45 degrees to help facilitate left hand manipulation.

My SAR2 that I got in 2000 had the angled handle.
The turned off barrel threads and horrendously machined finish caused me to sell it in 04 to a good home.

two years later, I got me a bulgarian kit in 5.45x39.
This one didn't have the angled handle.

After thinking about it and looking at gallery pics, I haven't seen any other AK-74 with it either.

Does anyone have one of the angled handle types????

The only ones I know of are the Galil, those have the upswept handle.

I run my AK similar to how I'd run a M1 or M14: Right hand handles reloads while left hand supports. Swap for left shoulder.

Both the WASR 2 I got have the angled cocking handle, better clearance on a Romanian side folding stock then the straight handled on my WASR 10

A lot of WASR-2's came with swept-up charging handles.

In Romania, AIMS-74's (the standard issue AK-74's) also come with up-swept charging handles...

I'm trying to build an AIMS-74 replica, for that matter.

How long is the handle and at what angle is it bent.

For some reason I remember it being a bit longer and cant be duplicated by simply heating and bending a straight one.

Pics???

It's nominally at a 45-degree angle, but I'm sure there are some variations related to quality-control issues. I think it's a little longer than a normal charging handle.

Here's a few pics of the charging handle on my wasr2.  It makes me smile when I think about buying it a few years ago for under $300 at Dunham's.

I have a CUR II - 5.45x39 w/ muzzle brake soldered on and charging handle tilted upward.  It was made in 1997 w/ mandatory thumbhole stock which has now been converted to regular pistol grip and folding stock.

The true AK74 has a charging handle that is upswept at a 45 degree angle. Many countries that adopted the AK74 followed this design feature, but not all.

Most, if not all, of the Romanian AK74 clones have this feature. A close friend has a Romak 2 which was preceded by the MK II. I have two of the MK II rifles and all three have the upswept charging handle.

I'm absolutely sure this is wrong. A quick look at the projects and history on Tantal's site (and on guns.ru) has absolutely no mention of upswept charging handles on models other than the AIMS-74.

+1.  That's pretty much inaccurate information but not entirely wrong.

The Romanians adopted the angled "upturned" bolt handle on their AIMS-74 (AKS-74) and RPKS-74 rifles.  Bulgaria and Russia continued using the standard bolt handle design.

However, North Korean also adopted the Romanian the angled "upturned" bolt handle on two of their known three variants of Type 88 rifles (in 5.45x39mm) which includes the full-buttstock and side-folding buttstock versions.  North Korea's Type 88 rifle with the over-folding buttstock appears to have a straight but rounded bolt handle.  But, North Korea also uses the angled "upturned" bolt handle on their version of the RPK-74.
