the day i purchased my rifle i decided to go over the basics of disassembling. long story short, i took out the cleaning rod and have not been able to get it all the way back in its place

Can you be more specific?  You kinda have to bend the end of the rod gently to get it over that last hump that retains it under the front sight base.  Mine sometimes gets hung up inside the handguard or near the trunnion so I tap it with a plastic mallet while bending until the bugger goes back in its place.

Push it in as normal from the front under the bbl, when it starts to get stuck, squeeze it up towards the bbl from underneath close to where it enters the lower HG. or simply push it in with one hand while squeezing it (or pushing up on it) as it enters the LHG. it will go.
