Just got my first AK.  It's a Romanian WASR10 from Century.  Around the pieces of the trigger control group is something that looks like safety wire.  It's silver and braided and wrapped around the pins of the parts.  Everything seems to function ok but I haven't seen this on any pictures or read about it anywhere.

Is this normal or should it be removed?

TIA

It belongs there. It is a spring. Work the fire control group and you will see what it does.

I think you mean the spring.

No I really mean wire that wraps around the hammer, trigger and disconnector like a safety wire.  It is not the spring that is part of the pin retention system.  This stuff is much thicker than the spring wire and actually has more than 1 'thread.'

The only multi-strand, "braided" spring in the AK fire control group is the hammer spring, which also functions as the trigger return spring.  Other than the hammer spring and the pin-retention "shepherd's crook" spring, there should be no other springs or wires wrapping around the AK fire control group.

Sounds like the rataining wire for the pins.

Does it look like this? AK retaining wire

So that silver, twisted wire going around the hammer and back to the trigger is actually a spring?  Sure doesn't look like the ones in the kits I've seen.

Thanks all.

Not to be rude but what kind of kits have you seen? I have built 7 different Ak types many times over and have yet NOT to see that exact spring in there. It is absolutely integral to the functioning of the weapon. There simply is NO other spring.

Not taken as anything but an honest question...

Here's one pic of a parts kit and I don't see anything that resembles that long twisted spring that I have.  There was a couple of others.

However, I admit to being a total noob on the subject of AK's.  So maybe I'm missing something.

Open your frigging eyes.  It is sitting right there in the picture you posted from K-VAR's site.  You obviously haven't seen parts kits in person or ever looked into an AK before.  That is the hammer spring and all AKs have them.  www.gunsnet.net/Linx310/fcgremoval.htm

Oops, sorry to ruin your day MAK but that sure didn't look like a thick, twisted wire to me.  Instead it looked a lot like a thin wire spring similar to one in an AR.  I also admitted to not knowing a damn thing about AKs or perhaps your so busy ranting to the world that you didn't read that.  Yep, you're right this is indeed the very first AK I've every had a chance to open up and examine.  I did search around quite a bit and even read the Romy AK pages over on gunsnet.  I apologize for not having taken an Armorers course prior to asking my question.  Oh but wait a minute, if I had done that I wouldn't have asked and you wouldn't have had a chance to vent.  So, I guess i served you minute ego some purpose.

I always wondered why this place had the reputation that it does and I can see why.  Mostly nice and polite with some true A*holes.

Thanks again to all those that put up with my noob question.  I'll do my best not to bother anyone with another one for a long, long time.

Hey man, there's really no need to get all offended. You do need to have thick skin to hang around here, but there's a lot of good info here. People just get tired of answering super simple questions over and over when all the info is already available in other threads on this site... and some of the best threads with the newbie info are tacked right up at the top of the AK section where it's easy to find.

As for the

... well, there was a great german philosopher who once said something like: "That which does not kill you makes you stronger".
You'll be okay.

If you right click that picture of the spring in the red square. and save it. you can blow the picture up and see that it is a twisted wire spring.

Just because it's design is different from what you have normally seen, doesn't mean that it isn't any good.

There are around 70 million AK's in this world since it's inception in the late 40's using this type of spring.

The Russians build things to last. If they built the "Timex" watch,it would probably weigh a half a pound. But you would never need to buy another watch, cuz it would last your lifetime
