Probably a hundred different ways to refinish wood. You might want to search the site or Google for the info you need.

If all else fails as to the wood, you could go with the synthetic Warsaw pact furniture in black for an updated look.....

i just used minwax polycrylic clear gloss from sherman williams. gave the stocks a light sanding tack ragged  to remove dust and finished it with a disposible foam brush. turned out nice with no runs or streaks . made the wasr look 100%better

While you say "not so good looking" others will say it looks just fine.  But it is your rifle so make it how you want it to be.  Many here go for the reddish color look, I prefer a more brown, but this is personal preference and you can use wood stain to get where you want to go.

Most of us prefer a smooth stock so you will need to do some sanding.  My advice is to block sand so as to not create indentations from getting agressive on a particular spot.  Sanding needs to be done is progressive steps starting with course (perhaps 100 grit) sanding until it feels overall smooth then go to 150 grit and sand out all the scratches created with the courser paper.  Then go to finer paper, say 220 grit and sand out the intermediate scratches.  For a fine walnut stock you woulf go one or two steps further, but with a laminated WASR stock 3 grades of paper will probably be fine.

Dust it off completely and stain if you want to change the color then a few coats of polyurethane or a more traditional (but less durable) Boiled Linseed Oil finish.  If using polyurethane you probably want to use satin finish to avoid the high gloss finish (or maybe not, it's your rifle!)

If you finish the stock now you will be way ahead of the guys who shoot it and ger hand oils and gun cleaner into the raw wood as these things really are hard to get out of the wood and forever discolor it.

Good Luck on your project, I redid a WASR a few years ago, came out nice, still looks good.
