My dad just bought a Sar1. It is a nice rifle, but the top half of the forearm grip is canted to one side. Is there an easy fix for this? Is the top half connected to the gas tube? Can I put a strap on it and twist it straight or will this damage something? Forgive me if my terminology is incorrect. thanks, Mike

Uaually you can just twist it while it's attached to the rifle...the wood fits into a "U" shaped channel on the gas tube.

www.gunsnet.net/Linx310/index.shtml will answer most of the questions you may have about the SAR-1 and there are tutorials with pictures about how to correct problems, including the one that you mention.

I've had a SAR-1 since 2003 and it is an excellent rifle.

If it is just the wood, and not the gas tube that is canted, you should be able to twist it.  The wood easily twists off for maintance purposes, and probably wasn't put back on straight.  Just hold the gas tube with a vice (or wrench), and twist the wood.
If its the gas tube that is canted, that can be fixed.  You have to drill out the pins, realign, and then peen in some new pins.  Harder than I make it sound, but certainly doable...

ETA:  I love my SAR 1.  For now it is my goto rifle.  That may change once I get my Polish Underfolder built, but for now the SAR 1 is queen...

Your Dad made a good choice in my opinion. I believe the SAR-1 is one of the best values out there. I sometimes spray a bit of CLP on the ends of the upper handguard to reduce friction as I twist them away, or back on to the gas tube.
