| would an ak be legal with R922 or whatever if it had an ironwood stock set and a flash hider? or do you need more than that? i dont want to screw around with a new fcg and bastardise one of the best parts of the gun. |
depends on if your bbl is already threaded or not. if threaded you can install a us mfg f/hider (1 u.s. mfg part) if its not you can still install a f/hider. i did a u.s mfg. f/hider on a SAR-1 enlarged the opening until it was a snug fit when pressed over the muzzle. quick mig spot weld and it is not (1) permanently installed (2) not a threaded bbl. OR using a u.s furniture set (3 parts) i would suggest a red star arms triger assy that gives you another 3 us parts . add a u.s mfg gas piston and you should be good to go. ANOTHER way to instal a f/hider legally w/out adding more u.s parts is to install a f/hider that DOES NOT have the same thread pattern as a standard AK. say go with a 9/16 rh thread. this gives you a threaded bbl that does not allow a common f/hider to be installed. that IS allowed. |
Where does it say that in the regulations? A muzzle brake like the AK-74 type maybe, but a flash hider is a flash hider no matter what the thread size is and the law prohibits an imported rifle with a certain number of evil features. The addition of any removable muzzle device of any thread size adds one additional part to the rifle unless it is permanently affixed to become a part of the barrel. Pistol grip protruding conspicuously from the bottom of the rifle, detachable high capacity mag, flash hider. These are all mentioned in the law. He has already stated how he plans on configuring the rifle and there is only one way to do it legally.

| Hmm, on my milled MAK-90 I did the Ironwood Designs Stock - 3 Parts, and a US MFG Gas Piston - 1 part. If I wanted to add a flash hider, couldn't I just add a US made AR style FH, since I would have to re-thread the barrel anyway to get the total of 5 compliance parts? |
| ok so i broke down and bought this Mak 90 > http://ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=7&f=122&t=403509 came with a us made butstock and pistol grip along with the original thumbhole ( ewwww) 3 30 rounders and a 5 rounder. for $325.00 so it was kind of hard to pass up. anywayscan somone point me in the right direction with a " 922 compliance package" that includes green or black furniture and as little bastardization to the rifle as possible. any sugestions and or pics would be a great help. |

Actually, your rifle can not have more than 10 imported parts on it. For a MAK-90, IIRC, those parts would be: (1) Frames, receivers, receiver castings, forgings or stampings (2) Barrels (3) Mounting blocks (trunions) (4) Muzzle attachments (5) Bolts (6) Bolt carriers (7) Gas pistons (8) Triggers (9) Hammers (10) Disconnectors (11) Buttstocks (12) Pistol grips (13) Forearms, handguards (14) Magazine bodies (15) Followers (16) Floorplates Note: the following parts are listed under 922(r), but are not part of the AK: Trigger housings** Barrel extensions** Operating rods** Sears** So, in the list of 16 above, since you want a flash hider, you need to pick 6 parts to replace to have no more than 10 imported parts on your rifle. A complete stock set counts as 3, and you need to pick the other three. You could go with a Tapco G2 trigger group or a Redstar Arms milled trigger group to get you another 3 parts. Another option would be to replace 5 parts and add a US made muzzle device/flash hider over an imported muzzle device. Confused? It isn't that bad, but it is a PITA to decide because the Chinese triggers are the best triggers on the market. |
I doubt that it would, since a recoil buffer is not on the BATFE's list of 20 parts. I have also been told by my local SOT that you need to be extremely careful if you are trying to "add" parts to a gun because it is subject to interpretation. Up until recently, it was debatable whether replacing a fixed magazine on a SKS with a duckbill detachable mag was three parts. The reason being is that the fixed mag was only two parts, a follower and magazine body, whereas the detachable mag could be counted as 3 due to the fact that it had a follower, floorplate, and body. I recently read a letter that someone posted stating that it was okay to count the US mfg detachable magazines as 3 parts but the location of the letter escapes me. Now, to contradict myself, since most MAK-90s had the threads turned down, there is no way a standard flash hider can be installed. So technically you are adding a part, and I am certain that part can be US made. I wonder if Krebs has any for sale |

The MAK-90s can be threaded either 14x1 or 1/2 x 28 kit will thread an SAR2 or SAR3 and other barrels with an outside diameter of approximately .500". This is the thread size of most AR15 FHs and some of the FHs on the market of that thread size are foreign which means you would in fact be adding another foreign part to your rifle if you put one on. |
